Otters Dominate Against Cal Lutheran

CSUMB splits day in Rohnert Park with win over Cal Lu, followed by close loss to Sonoma State.

Rohnert Park, Calif. –  The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team traveled to Sonoma State for a pair of games, starting the day off with a 16-12 victory over Cal Lutheran. Later in the afternoon the Otters faced conference-foe Sonoma State. CSUMB worked hard for a go-ahead goal in the second half but the Seawolves earned the 10-9 win at home.
 
Senior Nikki Smart (Clovis/Buchanan HS) rounded out the afternoon with team-high nine points.
 
After splitting the day, the Otters still post a winning 6-4 overall record.
 
The Otter water polo team will revisit Santa Clara on Saturday, Feb. 25 along with Cal Baptist at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. Game times are set for 9 a.m. and noon.


Game 1

The Otters and Regals matched each other for the first half of play staying even with nine goals each. CSUMB outscored Cal Lutheran in the remaining two quarters to edge out a 16-12 win to start the day.
 
Smart scored seven goals tying her single game season-high, previously set against Fresno Pacific (Feb. 4). Classmate Katie Sowul (Anaheim/Esperanza HS) added another four to the teams total.
 
Freshman Jessica Laurence (Danville/MonteVista HS) scored her first collegiate goal as an Otter in the final quarter of play.
 
Despite it being such a high scoring game, freshman Amanda Jennings (Oakley/Freedom HS) recorded five saves in two quarters of play. Paige Robinson (San Jose/Lynbrook HS) added another three.

Game 2
 
The Otters where outscored by one point in both the first and second quarter.
 
Two goals to start the fourth by the Otters tied the game at eight. But the Seawolves lead from the start of the game would ultimately give them what they needed to eke out a one point win.
 
Sowul finished with a team-high three points to finish the afternoon with a total seven goals. Five other Otters contributed to the team total.
 
Splitting time in the cage, both Robinson and Jennings blocked four shots on goal by Sonoma.
