More Heartbreak For Otters In 78–76 Loss

Last second shot doesn’t fall as East Bay hangs on

SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second consecutive game, Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't get the key late shot to fall as visiting Cal State East Bay hung on at the buzzer for a 78–76 win Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) scored 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half as the Otters rallied from 12 points down late to give themselves a chance to win on the final possession. To East Bay's credit, the Pioneer defense stepped up to hold the Otters to an off-balance 3-point attempt as the final horn sounded.

The Otters never led, but they kept East Bay within shouting distance for the entire 40 minutes. The Pioneers led by five at the half and built their biggest lead, 72–60, with just under four minutes remaining in regulation.

The Otters never gave in, however, and chipped away at the lead until a Jones layup pulled them to within 77–76 with 14 seconds to play. A quick foul sent East Bay to the line, when Payden White made 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Otters life and the ball with 12 seconds left. But the defense held firm and the Otters couldn't get a good look before a last-ditch three missed the mark.

In addition to Jones, Michael Mora (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) scored 16 points. Joey Bilello (11 points) and Jaden Tengan (10) also reached double figures. Ariya Briscoe added a season-high seven assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday's game wasn't over until the final horn sounded.

JONES ON THE BLOCKS: With three blocks Saturday versus Cal State East Bay, Blake Jones moved into the Top 10 on the Otter single-season blocks list with 22. He needs one more to tie fellow Aussie Andrew Ferguson (2022) for ninth on the list.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS: With a season-high seven blocks Saturday against Cal State East Bay, the Otters moved all the way from No. 8 to No. 5 on the single-season blocks list with 76. They'll tie the 2002 teams for fourth place with their next block. At their current pace, the Otters would finish with 108 blocks, just one off the school record set in 2006.

'TIS BETTER TO GIVE: Led by Ariya Briscoe's season-high seven dimes, the Otters passed 17 assists Saturday versus Cal State East Bay, That was just one off their season high of 18 set at Stanislaus State on Nov. 30.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Blake Jones 19; REBOUNDS: Alec Zambie 7; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe 7; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 3; STEALS: Chol Deng 2.
