This Time Heartbreak Comes In Double OT

Blake Jones scores 25 in 95-94 loss at Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. — Three courageous Cal State Monterey Bay late comebacks provided one point too little as Cal Poly Humboldt held on to defeat the Otters in double overtime, 95–94, Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The Otters had the last shot, and although Michael Mora's (Palo Alto/Univ. of Vermont) three from the wing looked good, it came back off the back of the rim as the horn sounded.

Senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) was huge for CSUMB, scoring a career-high 25 points and adding 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Mora, meanwhile, caught fire late, scoring all 16 of his points in the second half or overtime.

The Otters actually led by five at the half, 38–33, but Humboldt quickly erased that advantage after intermission. The Lumberjacks appeared to break the game open late, taking their biggest lead at 64–54 with seven minutes remaining.

But an 8–0 Otter run, capped buy a Mora 3-pointer, got the Otters close before a 4-point play by Mora gave the Otters a 67–66 lead with less than four minutes to go. The Lumberjacks eventually scratched out a 76–73 lead in the final minute before another Mora 3-pointer with 16 seconds left knotted the score at 76–76 and forced the first overtime.

Humboldt appeared to take control once again when it scored the first seven points of OT, only to see an Alec Zambie (Plano, Texas/Ft. Worth Christian) trey cap a 7–0 Otter run to tie the score at 83–83. The teams again traded late baskets to force the second OT.

This time, Humboldt scored the first five points before another Zambie three tied the game at 90–90. The Lumberjacks had a chance to extend their lead to three points with nine seconds left, but Rob Diaz missed a pair of free throws, giving CSUMB a shot at the win.

Sadly for Otter fans, that shot didn't fall.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Thursday at Cal Poly Humboldt, that moment didn't come until Michael Mora's 3-point attempt came off the rim as time expired.

THE OTTER BLOCK PARTY…  The Otters blocked six shots Thursday at Cal Poly Humboldt, bringing their season total to 82 and moving them to No. 4 in the Otter record book for blocks in a season. They need one more to tie the 1998–99 squad at No. 3. At their current pace, they will break the program record of 109 blocks set by the 2005–06 Otters.

BLAKE ON THE BLOCKS… With two blocks Thursday at Cal Poly Humboldt, Blake Jones moved up to No. 9 on the Otter single-season list for blocked shots with 24. He needs to more to tie Kris Gallop (2013) at No. 8. In case you're wondering, Billy Curry set the CSUMB record with 40 blocks during the 2000–01 season.

CLOSE ONLY COUNTS IN HORSESHOES… The basketball gods continue to toy with the Otters, and not in a good way. Not only was Thursday's setback at Cal Poly Humboldt CSUMB's third overtime loss of the season, it marked the eighth time in 12 CCAA losses that CSUMB has fallen by four or fewer points or overtime.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… All nine Otters who played Thursday at Cal Poly Humboldt scored. Four Otters — Blake Jones (25), Michael Mora (16), Chol Deng (12) and Alec Zambie (12) — reached double figures with two others — Joey Bilello and Jaden Tengan — finished with nine.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Blake Jones 25; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 11; ASSISTS: Alec Zambie 5; BLOCKS: Chol Deng/Blake Jones 2; STEALS: Ariya Briscoe/Blake Jones 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 2-game NorCal roadtrip by heading inland to face Chico State Saturday (Feb. 8). Tip-off is at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
