Otters Fall At The Buzzer In Opener, 89-88

Jaden Tengan leads five Otters in double figures with 22

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A furious comeback that erased a 16-point second-half deficit came up one point short at the buzzer as Cal State Monterey Bay fell to Western Oregon 89–88 Friday night in Central Washington University's Nicholson Arena.

Trailing by three with six seconds remaining, the Otters raced upcourt, where junior Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) was fouled attempting a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Briscoe made the first two but missed the third, allowing the Wolves to hang on for the win.

Sophomore Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) led five Otters in double figures with 22 points. University of Montana transfer Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) added a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double as well as a game-high eight assists in his first appearance as an Otter.

Western appeared ready to run away with the game when it opened its biggest lead at 66–50 with just over 13 minutes to play. The Otters needed just five minutes to close the gap to within two at 68–66 on a Sage Wayans (South Pasadena HS/Cal Poly Humboldt).

The WOU lead climbed back to 11 at 82–71 before the Otters made their dash to the finish line. A Briscoe 3-pointer got them to within 88–86 with eight seconds remaining. An Otter foul sent Western's O'Shen Cazimero to the line, where he missed the second of two free throws to give the Otters life and set up the frantic final seconds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Friday versus Western Oregon, it wasn't statistically over until the clock hit all naughts.

FOR OPENERS: The Otters have been treading water recently opening night, winning 7 of their last 16 openers, including Friday's 89–88 loss to Western Oregon. Overall, CSUMB is 9–16 on opening night dating back to 1998–99.

FOR (ROAD) OPENERS: The Otters are now 6–11 overall when opening away from The Kelp Bed.

A DOUBLE FIGURE QUINTET: The Otters put five scorers in double figures Friday versus Western Oregon: Jaden Tengan (22 points), Michael Mora (15), Blake Jones (14), Sage Wayans (12) and Ariya Briscoe (11).

DOUBLE FIGURE QUINTET, REDUX: Friday's game marked the second consecutive game in which five Otters scored in double figures. It also happened in the 2023–24 seasons finale at Stanislaus State. In fact, it's now happened in three of the last four games dating back to last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Jaden Tengan 22; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones 13; ASSISTS: Blake Jones 8; BLOCKS: Konner Baroni 2; STEALS: Michael Mora 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take a day off before closing play at the CCAA/GNAC Crossover Tournament Sunday against host and No. 15 ranked Central Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
