Otters Tame No. 15 Wildcats, 72–58

Otters close game on a 13-0 run

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — A balanced effort that saw 10 different Otters score led Cal State Monterey Bay over No. 15 Central Washington 72–58 Sunday afternoon in Nicholson Arena. The win was CSUMB's first over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2022.

Cal Poly Humboldt transfer Sage Wayans (South Pasadena HS) led the way with 13 points. Chol Deng (Sydney, NSW) added 11 points and Konner Baroni (Auburn/Yuba College) chipped in 10. Sophomore Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) came off the bench to pull down a game-high eight rebounds.

Although the Otters never trailed in the second half, the game remained a nip-and-tuck affair until the defense put the clamps over the final four and a half minutes. Central pulled to within one at 59–58 before CSUMB held the Wildcats scoreless over the final 4:35 of regulation. The Otters finished with a 13–0 scoring run while Central went 0-for-6 from the floor with four turnovers to close the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Sunday at Central Washington, Javon Johnson's driving layup with 1:26 to play made it 72–58 and statistically ended the game.

GIANT KILLERS: CSUMB's 72–58 win over No. 15 Central Washington was its first over a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating then No. 7 Chico State 64–61 on Jan. 22, 2022. It was CSUMB's first road win over a nationally-ranked opponent since defeating then No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona 67–65 on Feb. 11, 2016.

SUNDAY FUNDAY: Although they don't play on the day very often, Sundays have been fundays for the Otters, who are 3–1 on the dating back to 2020.

A DOUBLE FIGURE SEPTET: After five different Otters scored in double figures Friday versus Western Oregon, the team added two new members to the double figure club Sunday with Chol Deng (11 points) and Konner Baroni (10 points) joining in on the fun. Only eight different players scored in double figures all last season for CSUMB.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sage Wayans 13; REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello 8; ASSISTS: Jaden Tengan 4; BLOCKS: Blake Jones 3; STEALS: Konner Baroni 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host Colorado Christian University Sunday (Nov. 17) for their 2024-25 home opener. Tip-off will be at 1 p.m.
