12-In-A-Row: Hartojo Leads Otters to Record Setting Victory

Nico Hartojo tosses six scoreless, drives in a run as Otters down finish sweep of Chico 8-4

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
The Otters set a new program record, defeating Chico State 8-4 to win their 12th in a row Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

It was a shaky start for the Otters, who fell behind 4-1 in the third. Unfazed by the early deficit, the Otters battled back to score five in the fourth to retake the lead, three of which came across on a Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS) three-run blast. The Otters put on three more insurance runs in the latter third of the game, however, they would prove to be icing on the cake, as Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) tossed six scoreless innings out of the pen to pick up the victory.

With their 12th consecutive victory, the 2023 Otter Baseball squad now holds the record for the longest win streak in program history.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Drew Williams blasted a solo shot in the eighth to push the Otter lead to 8-4.

HARTOJO DOES IT ALL… Junior Swiss army knife Nico Hartojo was the driving force behind the Otters victory today. Getting the start at the designated hitter position, Hartojo drove in the first run of a five run fourth inning that would net the Otters a lead that they would never relinquish. Hartojo was also called on to pitch in this one, relieving starter Mitchell Torres in the fourth, and tossing six shutout innings. This was the third time this season where Hartojo has pitched and hit for himself, picking wins in all three of those occasions.

NO MARGIN FOR ERROR… Chico cruised through the first 3.2 innings in this one. The Otters scratched across two runs in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 4-3 when it looked like Kyle Barileau grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning, however, catcher's interference was called and the inning was extended. That brought Brady Miguel to the plate, who promptly bashed a three-run home run over the right field fence, giving the Otters the lead at 5-4. That home run flipped the script, as the Otters would not trail for the remainder of the game.

EVERYBODY HITS… For just the second time this season, every Otter who came to the plate recorded at least one hit. The first instance of this also came at home, when the Otters defeated San Francisco State 11-4 on Mar. 3. In total, 11 different Otters recorded a hit in the series, led by Nico Hartojo and Cole Murchison, who each had six knocks.

THE FINAL WORD… "Chico State is a great program, with great coaches, and a history of success. We knew the series would be a challenge, and I couldn't be more proud of the way our team competed and came through all weekend. Our pitching and defense, along with timely hitting carried us in the series. Overall, it was a great weekend for the Otters." – Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close out their five game homestand with a midweek non-conference bout with the Hawks of Holy Names University. First pitch is set for 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, Apr. 11.
