Bailey Bordas Inside-the-Park Homer Proves Just Enough for Otters to Down Holy Names

Otters use eight pitchers and one big hit to defeat the Hawks 1-0

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
In their first mid-week action of the Spring, CSUMB Baseball downed Holy Names in a 1-0 thriller Tuesday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The two teams were locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel in the bottom of the seventh when Bailey Bordas (Rancho Cucamonga/CSU Dominguez Hills) launched a tower ball high into the night sky. Neither Holy Names outfielders in the vicinity could track the ball, as it fell between the two and rolled to the wall. Aware of the miscue, Bordas flew around the base paths, scoring the go-ahead run with a triumphant slide at the plate. That would prove to be the only offense the Otters would need, as the pitching staff took care of business in the 1-0 victory.

The Otters used eight pitchers (Michael Potter, Cade Balma, Jackson Torsey, Nick Bouillerce, Ryan Fleming, Christian McInerney, Ryan Io, and Sonny Brandwood)  to combine for the shutout victory. McInerney would pick up his first win of the season, tossing a scoreless seventh inning, while Sonny Brandwood earned the save, his first of the season.

The Otters continue to keep their winning streak alive, having now won 13 straight.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Brandwood induced a flyout to right field with the bases loaded to end the game.

BORDAS ON THE BOARD… Bailey Bordas accounted for the Otters only run in this one, an inside-the-park round tripper. It was Bailey's first hit as an Otter and his second collegiate home run.

JOHNNY ALLSTAFF DOMINATES… The Otters used eight pitchers in this mid-week contest, each of which played a major role in the shutout victory. Every arm used by the Otters allowed at least one base runner, but each pitcher was able to work out of trouble in the shutout effort. In total, Otter pitching was able to strand 14 Hawk runners on the basepaths.

A WILD NINTH… Holy Names threatened to hit the scoreboard on multiple occasions, but none closer than in the ninth inning. Sonny Brandwood fanned the first batter he faced, but then allowed back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one away. The next pitch Brandwood threw was a hot shot to first baseman Jacob Dressler, who promptly fired the ball to catcher Matthew Oliden, who applied the tag in time to cut down the tying run at the plate. A walk would then be issued to load the bases, before Brandwood would get the final out, lazy fly ball to right field to end the game.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be on the road next weekend, as they head to Southern California for a four game set with the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino. The series will kick off on Friday, Apr. 14 with a 3:00 P.M. first pitch.
