Torres Sharp Again As Otters Complete Sweep

Mitchell Torres throws eight scoreless in 4-1 win at East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — Sophomore pitcher Mitchell Torres (Valencia HS/Mesa CC) gave another dominant performance, throwing eight shutout innings to help Cal State Monterey Bay complete a series sweep of Cal State East Bay with a 4–1 win Sunday at Pioneer Field.

Torres allowed just five hits, striking out four and walking two to improve to 3–0 this season. And he needed to be sharp as the East Bay duo of Garrison Finck and Tristan Tatum held the Otters to six hits and a Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) RBI single through seven innings.

An RBI single by Dominic Felice (Monte vista Christian/MPC) and a run-scoring double from Robbie Treto (Arleta/L.A. Pierce College) highlighted a 3–run Otter eighth inning that gave the Otters valuable insurance.

Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) led the Otter offense with three knocks, including his sixth double of the season. Kyle Barileau (Valencia HS/Ohlone College) added a double as part of the 10–hit attack.

THE WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna coaxed Essex Brown, representing the winning run, to hit into a fielder's choice for the game's final out.

MAKE THAT EIGHT IN A ROW… Sunday's 4–1 win at Cal State East Bay marked the eighth consecutive victory for the Otters. Its their longest of the season and their longest since they won eight straight from Apr. 2–14, 2022.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… With Sunday's 4–1 win at Cal State East Bay, the Otters completed their second consecutive series sweep and their third in five CCAA attempts this season. In case you're wondering, the Otters have never swept three consecutive series, but they came two wins away from sweeping four during their first CCAA title run in 2013.

DOUBLE THE FUN, DOUBLES EDITION… The Otters hit three more doubles in Sunday's 4–1 win at Cal State East Bay, giving them 75 already this season. They need six more to pass the 2011 team for No. 15 on the CSUMB single–season list. They are barely off the record-setting pace of the inaugural CSUMB team in 2006 that set the record with 118 doubles.

DOUBLE THE FUN, HITS EDITION… By collecting 10 hits in Sunday's 4–1 win at Cal State East Bay, the Otter reached double digits in hits for the 17th time this season.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Cole Murchison (6), Robbie Treto (7), Kyle Barileau (4). TRIPLES: none. HOME RUNS: none.

THE LAST WORD… "Winning four games on the road against a solid East Bay club is quite the accomplishment. Our pitching and defense were on it all weekend. For the most part, we were really good on offense, but we were silenced most of the game today. But our team has shown the ability to put together big innings late and we were able to do it again this afternoon. We go in to the bye this week and it couldn't come at a better time. It will give us a chance to get healthy and then we will back to the CCAA grind with a challenging match up at home versus Chico State." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters take next week of for their CCAA bye week. They'll return to action Apr. 6–8 by hosting Chico State in a big 4–game series at the Otter Sports Complex.
