San Bernardino Stars Outweigh Otter Balance

All nine Otters score but Coyotes pull away for 95-80 victory

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — All nine Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball players scored Thursday night at No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino, but a pair of big performance by their star players led the Coyotes to a 95–80 win Thursday night in the Den.

Five Otters scored in double figures, led by senior Levi Frankland (Gold coast, Queensland, Australia), who scored 14 of his team–leading 16 points in the second half. Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) scored 13 points, Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 13 while Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) and J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) each chipped in 11.

San Bernardino countered with 25 from CCAA leading scorer Brandon Knapper and a 21-point, 10-rebound double–double by Robby Robinson.

CSUMB kept things close into the second half before San Bernardino began to pull away. The Coyotes used a 14–2 run midway through the second period to open a 20–point lead at 73–53. Although the Otters out-scored San Bernardino 22–11 over the final 10 minutes, they never got back into the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Mahmoud Fofana layup with 7:30 remaining gave the Coyotes an 89–65 lead.

THE PLAYOFF RACE IS ON… With Thursday's setback, the Otters (9–12, 7–9 CCAA) are now in seventh place, one-half game behind Chico State and San Francisco State for the fifth and sixth spots in the CCAA race. San Bernardino, meanwhile, maintained its 1 1/2 game lead over Cal State San Marcos. CSUMB and San Bernardino have seven games remaining. The rest of the CCAA teams have six games left.

EVERYBODY GETS IN ON THE ACTION… CSUMB saw everybody in action score in the same game for the first time this season when all nine Otters made the scoresheet Thursday at San Bernardino.

MOVIN' ON UP… With a team–high 16 points Thursday at Cal State San Bernardino, Levi Frankland moved up to 23rd on the CSUMB single–season scoring list with 357 points in 2022–23. Next up are Jay Demaestri (371 in 2004) and Devoughn Lamont (380 in 2005). Frankland's 357 points are the most by an Otter since Ryan Nitz score 517 during the 2015–16 season.

DOUBLE–DIGIT TREYS… With a season–high 13 3–pointers Thursday at Cal State San Bernardino, the Otters have made double–digit 3–pointers in 11-of-21 games this season. During Isaac Williams' tenure on the Otter bench, CSUMB has made 10 or more 3–pointers in 50.8 percent of its games (62-of-122).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 16. REBOUNDS: Levi Frankland/Javon Johnson/Charles Johnston/Joe Wall 4. ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 5. BLOCKS: Damjan Agovic 2. STEALS: Ameere Britton/Jared Williams 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game roadtrip with a huge game at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night. Pomona will enter play Saturday one-half game behind CSUMB in the CCAA standings.
