Otters Lose Key Game At Pomona, 73-63

Win gives Broncos series sweep in tight CCAA race

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay saw a chance to gain an important game in the tight CCAA Tournament race slip away when Cal Poly Pomona earned a 73–63 win Saturday night in Kellogg Arena.

With the loss, CSUMB (9–13, 7–10 CCAA) falls 1/2 game behind in the race for the sixth and final berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament. Pomona (11–11, 8–10) joins Chico State and San Francisco State in a 3–way tie for fifth place with four games remaining. The Otters have five games left, including the continuation of their Dec. 3 meeting with San Bernardino.

CSUMB kept Pomona within arm's length throughout the contest, but never got within two possessions of the lead over the final 20 minutes as the Broncos used a huge rebounding advantage (52–29) to help parry every run the Otters made. The Otters buried three 3–pointers in the final 2:18 of regulation, but the Broncos counted that with six free throws made down the stretch to blunt the final charge.

Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) made 5-of-10 from beyond the arc to account for all of his team–leading 15 points. Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 11 points and a team–high six rebounds. Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) matched his season high with six assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… an Otter turnover with 36 seconds remaining gave Pomona possessions holding a 72–63 lead.

FRANKLAND STREAK ENDS AT 14 GAMES… Levi Frankland saw his streak of double–figures scoring end at 14 games when Pomona held him to nine points Saturday night. He averaged 19.4 points per game over the streak.

WALL IS NUMBER THREE IN THREES… With five 3–pointers Saturday in Pomona, Joe Wall tied Josh Kollman (2018). for the No. 3 spot on the Otter single–season 3–pointers list with 77. He needs five more to pass Jay Demaestri (2006) for the No. 2 spot. Rocky Steryo set the all-time record with 93 made in 2002.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF REBOUNDING… The Otters pulled down a season–low 29 rebounds Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona while the Broncos grabbed a CSUMB opponent season–high 52 boards.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Joe Wall 15. REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 6. ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 6. BLOCKS: Jared Williams 1. STEALS: Ameere Britton/Levi Frankland/Jailen Nelson/Jared Williams 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play what amount to two more road playoff games next week when they head up the Central Valley for their final regular season road contests of 2022–23. The trip begins Thursday (Feb. 16) in Turlock at Stanislaus State. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
