Frankland’s Big Game, Nelson’s Big Bucket Lead Otters In Thriller

Levi Frankland scores 35, Jailen Nelson drills 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left to force OT win over L.A.

SEASIDE, Calif. — Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) scored a career–high 35 points and Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) knocked down a 3–pointer with 1.6 seconds remaining in regulation as Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from a 15–point, second half deficit to earn an 89–84 overtime win over Cal State L.A. Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

With the win, CSUMB (9–11, 7–8 CCAA) moved back into a tie for the sixth place in the tight CCAA race with six games remaining. L.A. (9–13, 6–10) dropped into a tie for 10th place.

The Golden Eagles began to pull away late in the first half and took a 41–32 lead into the break. Seven minutes into the second half, they had extended their lead to 15 points at 59–44 and appeared to be on their way to victory.

Still trailing by 12 inside of nine minutes to play, the Otters made their run. They methodically chipped away at the deficit until Frankland drove inside to pull CSUMB to within three at 77–74 with 42 seconds remaining. The Otter defense came up with the big stop, setting up Nelson's hero turn.

The sophomore guard, who ranks amongst the CCAA leaders in assists, looked first to set up a teammate before cutting through traffic to create space at the top of the key. He knocked down his only 3–pointer of the game with 1.6 seconds remaining to force extra time.

L.A. scored the first points of overtime, but a Frankland corner three gave the Otters their first lead since the 10–minute mark of the first half, 83–81. A driving layup by Nelson got the lead to two possessions the next time down the floor. CSUMB made four free throws in the final 26 seconds to secure the victory

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Joe Wall knocked down a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining to put the Otters up 89–84.

CAREER–HIGH FOR FRANKLAND… Levi Frankland's 35 points were a career high. His previous best was 31 points in a win at Cal State L.A. on Dec. 11, 2021.

WHERE IT RANKS… Levi Frankland's 35–point outburst in Saturday's win over Cal State L.A. ranks No. 5 on the Otter list for points in a game. They're the most points by an Otter since fellow Aussie Andrew Ferguson went for 34 in a win over Sonoma State on Jan. 16, 2020. In case you're wondering, the Otter record is 54 points by Richard Jenkins in a quadruple overtime win over Western Oregon in 2006.

THE BEAT GOES ON FOR FRANKLAND: Levi Frankland ran his streak of 20–point games to six in a row with 35 points in Saturday's win over Cal State L.A. Once again, in case you're wondering, the only other Otter to do it six games in a row was Davion Berry, who did it in 14 consecutive games from Jan 8–Feb. 24, 2011.

SCHILLING JOINS THE DOUBLE–DOUBLE CLUB… J.R. Schilling recorded the first double–double of his career, finishing with 10 points and game–high 10 rebounds. He is the fourth Otter to record a double–double this season, joining Charles Johnston, Jailen Nelson and Joe Wall.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 35; REBOUNDS: J.R. Schilling 10; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 6; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson 1; STEALS: J.R. Schilling/Joe Wall 1.

THE LAST WORD… "That was an incredible performance in terms of our guys' will to win. I know that I sound like a broken record, but I love this group of guys and how they manage to stay together regardless of the circumstances." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters kickoff a 4–game roadtrip Thursday (Feb. 9) at No. 19 ranked Cal State San Bernardino as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
