Otters Drop Tough Four Setter To Cal Poly Pomona

Lauren Reeves leads offense with 15 kills; Sam Chavez leads defense with 27 digs

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played a solid match, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona played just a little bit better to pull out a 27–25, 25–18, 22–25, 25–22 victory over the Otters Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 15 kills from Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS), a season–high 27 digs from Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) and a career–high 20 digs from setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove/San Diego State). But double–doubles from Daisy Duke (22 kills, 15 digs) and Samantha Campion (15 kills, 25 digs) proved too much to overcome.

The match turned at the end of the first set, when the Otters overcame a 24–22 deficit to serve set point at 25–24. But kills by Erin McFarland and Duke sandwiched around a Mackenzie Sullivan ace gave Pomona the set.

The Broncos pulled away midway through the second set to take a 2–0 lead before CSUMB turned the tables in set three to extend the match. The teams were tied at 21–all in the fourth set when Pomona scored four of the final five points to secure the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Daisy Duke's 22nd kill broke a 21–21 tie in the fourth set. The Otters never drew even again.

DIG THIS… The 27 digs by Sam Chavez Friday versus Cal Poly Pomona rank No. 8 on the Otter all–time list for digs in a 4–set match. Chavez set the record with 35 digs as a freshman against Stanislaus State on Sept. 21, 2019.

ON THE BLOCK… Senior Mollin Helfrich collected five blocks Friday versus Cal Poly Pomona to move up to No. 17 on the Otter career list with 143. She passed Anela Visesio and Lindsay Molinaro (both 142).

SHE'S ACES… Sophomore opposite Savanna Maker set a personal record with four aces Friday against Cal Poly Pomona.

THE HONBERGER 400… With 13 kills Friday versus Cal Poly Pomona, Kaylie Honberger became the 19th player in Otter history to reach the 400–kill mark. She now owns 410 career kills, passing Hilary Heath (408) and Baylie Pierson (407) for 17th place in the CSUMB record book.
