Otters Win A Match For The Ages, Topple No. 10 San Bernardino

Otters earn first victory over over Coyotes in a 5–set thriller

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team treated a raucous Kelp Bed crowd to perhaps the biggest win in program history by slaying No. 10 ranked Cal State San Bernardino 25–21, 21–25, 14–25, 25–18, 15–13 Saturday evening.

It marked CSUMB's (5–4, 1–1 CCAA) first win ever over the perennial national title contenders. San Bernardino fell to 7–2 and 1–1 with the loss.

The win was a complete team effort for the Otters, who received contributions up and down the lineup. Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led the offense with 17 kills. Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) led the front line defense with six blocks and libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led three Otters in double figures with 17 digs.

The Otters never trailed in winning the first set, but that victory only woke the sleeping giant. The Coyotes returned the favor in the second set then appeared to take the match by the scruff of the neck while cruising to a third set win and a 2–1 lead.

Rather than back down, the Otters roared to life, racing to leads of 9–2 and 11–4, retaking momentum and forcing the deciding fifth set.

Following the pattern set earlier, CSUMB quickly opened a 10–5 lead, only to see the more seasoned Coyotes weather the storm and battle back to tie the set at 12–12. That's when San Bernardino finally blinked.

A bad set by Marlee Nunley broke the deadlock in CSUMB's favor and a Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) kill set up match point. Lydia Morohunfola saved one of those, before Otters setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove/San Diego State) found the floor to start the celebration.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a second contact kill from Ashley Vanderpan off a Kaylie Honberger feed gave the Otters the final point.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE… Prior to Saturday's match, the Otters and Coyotes honored the memory of former Otter star Kiley Stout, a pediatric oncology nurse who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year at the age of 36. Cal State San Bernardino was a fitting opponent for the recognition as Kiley played club volleyball for San Bernardino coaches Kim Cherniss and Danny Scott at Rancho Valley. "Thank you to Kiley's parents, Marie and Rich, for coming tonight," said CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi, a teammate of Kiley's while a student–athlete at CSUMB. "Marie spoke to our team before warm ups and our hearts and focus were aligned from that moment."

FIRST TIME IS A CHARM… Saturday's win was the first for CSUMB over Cal State San Bernardino in 33 all–time meetings dating back to 2001. In fact, the Otters had never taken more than a set from the Coyotes before Saturday night's win. San Bernardino led the series in set victories 96–6 prior to Saturday night.

GIANT KILLERS, PART I… Saturday's win over No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino was CSUMB first win over a nationally–ranked opponent since a 25–20, 25–18, 25–23 win over then No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 2, 2018.

GIANT KILLERS, PART II… No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino was the highest ranked opponent ever defeated by the Otter volleyball team. The previous best was a 29–27, 25–22, 18–25, 15–25, 15–12 win over then No. 11 UC San Diego on Sept. 17, 2010.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauren Reeves 18.5; KILLS: Lauren Reeves 17; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 6; ACES: Savanna Maker 2; DIGS: Sam Chavez 17.

THE LAST WORD… "Tonight feels as big as it was. From the start, the team felt hungry to prove something to ourselves—that we're capable and willing to work and earn these big moments. I am so proud of Aly, Ash, Ri, Hannah, Lo, Kay, Jack, Maddie, Brenna, Sav, Izzay, Ken, Mollin, Kea, Mik, Kaila, Chav, Bella, Dani, Ryan and Cody." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their annual Central Valley trip to Chico State and Stanislaus State Sept. 16–17. First serve both nights is scheduled for 5 p.m.
