Otters Drop Heartbreaker To Biola, 10–9

Eagles score as time expires to win; Gillis nets hat trick

SEASIDE, Calif. — Biola University scored from distance in the final second regulation to stun Cal State Monterey Bay, 10–9, Friday night in The Otter Tank.

The game seemed destined for overtime when the Otters forced a Biola turnovers with 10 seconds remaining. But a miscommunication on the outlet saw the ball fall to Biola senior Hanna Jordan. She collected the loose ball and found the upper right corner from about 10 yards out as the clock expired.

The dramatic ending befitted the razor thin margin that separated the teams throughout the match. Biola jumped to an early 3–1 lead. The Otters rallied to tie the match at 3–3 on a Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) goal early in the second period.

From that point forward, the teams played through seven ties as neither team able to forge more than a one goal advantage over the final 21 minutes.

With Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) missing the final six minutes after picking up her third exclusion, the Otters played without one of their top weapons down the stretch. Nevertheless, Cali Havens (Pasadena/St. Lucy's Priory) gave CSUMB its last lead at 9–8 midway through the fourth.

Biola tied it one minute later on Maria Roldan Gonzalez's only marker of the game.

The Otters killed off a Biola 6–on–5 inside the final two minutes to seemingly take momentum, but they couldn't capitalize on any of their final three possessions.

"We had a great game tonight. We came out with great energy and that energy carried us throughout the game," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We were down a few players due to injury and illness and the team stepped up and executed our game plan. With the younger players filling in and more experienced players playing in positions they normally would not, we're really happy with the way the game went."

Cat Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) and Rooney led the Otter offense Friday. Gillis scored three goals while Rooney added a goal and two assists. Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS), Havens, Fortune and Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) added the other Otter goals.

Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) made 11 saves in the cage, the seventh time this season she has posted double–digit stops.

CSUMB returns to action next Saturday at Biola University. The Otters return home to host San Diego State Mar. 31.
