Golden Opportunity Slips Away As Otters Settle For Split

CSUMB takes opener 13–3 but Chico rallies late to win nightcap 4–3

SEASIDE, Calif. — Just three outs separated Cal State Monterey Bay from a key doubleheader sweep of Chico State Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. But those three outs spoiled a brilliant first 13 innings as the Otters and Wildcats settled for a split.

CSUMB pinned a pair of 5–run innings on Chico to win the opener 13–3 before a 3–run seventh allow the Wildcats to escape with a 4–3 win in the nightcap.

San Benito High School products Greg Steinbeck and Connor Fabing were strong in Game 1, striking out eight and scattering seven hits. They could have been half as good and still won this one as Adrian Collazo and Charlie Nasuti (three hits apiece) led five Otters with multi–hit games in the big win. Collazo doubled twice while both he and Nasuti drove home three RBI.

The Otters jumped to an early lead in the nightcap when they parlayed a walk, a sacrifice and a Chico error into a first–inning run. A 2–run single from catcher Sam Nastari put the Otters up 3–0 after two.

Augusto Pineda looked strong in his first collegiate start, throwing 4 1/3 innings of 4–hit, shutout ball. Colby Harrison came in to strikeout both batters he faced to end the fifth.

But the Otter defense couldn't hold down the fort over the final two frames. A leadoff error in the Chico sixth led to the first Wildcat run. In the seventh, a leadoff walk and a 2–run homer by Willie LaJoie tied the game at 3–3.

Following a single and a sacrifice, CSUMB was in position to escape the jam, but another error allowed Eddie Zavala to score unearned from second base with what proved to be the winning run.

The Otters will look to earn a series split with Chico when the host the Wildcats for Game 4 of their series Sunday at 11 a.m.
