Offense Comes Alive Again As Otters Earn Series Split

CSUMB scores in double digits for the second time in three games, beats Chico 11–7

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay put up double–digit runs for the second time on the weekend Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex to earn an 11–7 win and a series split with Chico State.

Senior Levi Noddin (San Leandro/Arroyo HS), in a planned short start, earned his first win since 2018, striking out four in four solid innings.

Noddin received nearly all of the offensive support he would need in the first inning when the Otters exploded for five runs. Kokko Figueiredo's (Fortuna Union HS/College of the Redwoods) RBI double was the big hit amongst four in the frame.

CSUMB continued to tack on runs throughout the game, scoring in six innings overall. It turned out the Otters needed the extra support as Chico scrapped back into the game with five runs in its final four at bats. The Wildcats had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth when Sonny Brandwood (Dublin HS)/Laney College) escaped the jam by coaxing an game–ending 6–4–3 double play from the bat of Chico catcher Bryce Beauchamp.

Figueiredo led the offense with four of CSUMB's 14 hits and three runs scored. Sophomore Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) added three hits, two runs and three RBI.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Sonny Brandwood escaped a bases–loaded jam in the ninth inning with the help of a game–ending 6–4–3 double play.

DOUBLE (DIGIT) THE FUN… By scoring 11 more runs in Sunday's 11–7 win over Chico State, the Otters now have scored in double digits in four of their first 14 games. Its marks the fourth consecutive season the Otters can make that claim.

DOUBLE DOUBLE–DIGIT FUN… The Otters have posted five consecutive seasons in which they have scored 10 or more runs in a game 10 or more times, including a CSUMB–record 18 such outbursts during the 2018 season.

A LITTLE POWER… Although the Otter lineup doesn't have the traditional big bopper in the middle this season — four Otters lead the team with one home run each — that hasn't affected their ability to score runs. CSUMB has plated 95 runs through the first 14 games in 2020, compared to 83 runs over the same span last season.

PITCHING IN… Not only is the Otter offense scoring runs at a prodigious pace, the Otter pitching staff has already contributed 91 strikeouts through the first 14 games. The rate of 6.5 K/game would eclipse the CSUMB record pace of 6.46 K/game set during the 2018 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kokko Figueiredo (4x5, 2B, 3 R, RBI); Chase Lindemann (3x3, 2B, BB, 2 R, 3 RBI); Jacob Martin (1x3, 3B, BB, R, 2 RBI); Levi Noddin (W [1–1], 4.0 IP 2 R, 4 K, BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hits the road for a 4–game set at Cal State Stanislaus Feb. 28–Mar. 1 in Turlock.
