Kaitlin Rooney vs. Santa Clara

Offensive Explosion Leads To Friday Sweep In Claremont

| By:

Otters beat Cal Lutheran 11–9 and Whittier College 15–11

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Big days from seniors Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) and Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) led the Otters to a sweep of Cal Lutheran and Whittier College on the first day of the Claremont Convergence Tournament Friday at the Axelrood Aquatics Center. The Otters took a seesaw affair from the Regals 11–9 in their early match before quieting Whittier's Poets 15–11 Friday evening.

Lovos recorded a hat trick in both games while Tucker matched her with six goals, including four in the win over Whittier. CSUMB also got a hat trick from Sarah Smith (Cypress HS) against Cal Lutheran and one from freshman Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) against Whittier.

"For the second week in a row we found ourselves short handed, playing with an 11–player roster," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We had to be creative putting players in positions they don't normally play. It took us a bit to find our groove in each game but once we did, we played with our heads up and were able to find the back of the net."

Both games carried their share of excitement. Against Cal Lutheran, goals by Smith and freshman Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) broke a 7–7 tie and gave the Otters a 9–7 lead midway through the fourth period before the Regals pulled goals back on their next two possessions to tie it again.

But Smith responded by completing her hat trick to put the Otters back on top with 3:01 remaining in regulation. Lovos added an insurance goal in the final minute to complete her hatty.

Against Whittier, the Otters exploded for six unanswered goals to take a 9–4 late in the second period. The Poets had a run of their own left, however, and used it to tie the match at 9–9 late in the third.

Rooney and Tucker answered the challenge by scoring on consecutive possessions in the final minute of the third give the Otters and 11–9 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Angela Steele (Agoura HS) had a 2–goal game of her own in the win over Whittier. Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Lincoln HS) made 15 total saves, including nine against Whittier.

CSUMB closes play at the Claremont Convergence Tournament with Saturday matches against Cal Tech (9 a.m.) and host Claremont–Mudd–Scripps (1 p.m.).
