TEMPE, Ariz. — Four strong efforts against teams among the Top 30 in the nation finally paid dividends for the Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team as it finished play at Arizona State's Cross Conference Challenge with a 9–7 win over Iona University Sunday at ASU's Plummer Aquatics Center. CSUMB opened play Sunday with a 10–5 loss to No. 24 Cal Baptist.

"Playing nationally ranked teams this weekend was a good challenge," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We started a bit sluggish Sunday against CBU. Our defense came together and we were able to put together a complete game against Iona. It was great experience for us and we look forward to building off of this weekend."

Looking first at the win versus an Iona team receiving votes in this week's NCAA Division I Top 25 poll, the Otters surrendered two early goals before storming back to score five of the next and take a 5–4 lead into halftime. The Gaels tied the match twice in the third quarter, but the Otters responded with goals by Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) and Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) to retake the lead each time.

A goal midway through the fourth quarter from Angela Steele (Agoura HS) gave the Otters and 8–6 lead and proved to be the match–winner. Senior Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) completed her second hat trick of the young season with a late insurance goal.

In their early match, the Otters spotted Cal Baptist a 7–2 lead by halftime. Loves scored a pair early in the third quarter to give CSUMB fans some hope, but the Lancers scored the next three to put the game on ice.

Tucker led the Otter offense with four total goals Sunday. Lovos scored three times and freshman Hannah Kharazi (Clovis North HS) scored a goal in each match.
Senior Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Lincoln HS) went the distance in the cage and made 20 total saves, including 12 versus Cal Baptist.

CSUMB heads to the Central Valley Saturday for a pair of matches in Fresno. The Otters will face No. 25 Azusa Pacific at 2:30 p.m. and Western Water Polo Association rival Fresno Pacific at 5:30 p.m.
