SEASIDE, Calif. — It's been a series marked by long winning streaks for each team. Saturday night in Hayward, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will look to start a new winning streak of its own when it faces Cal State East Bay in Pioneer Gym in the second meeting of the season between the two squads.
CSUMB won seven straight from 2010 through 2012, but the Pioneers have controlled the series of late, winning the last 10, including a 65–36 win in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 2.
Fan who can't make it to Hayward for the game can follow the action on
OtterAthletics.com. Rob Ponce will have the call.
EastBayPioneers.com will provide live stats. There will be no live video for this game.
PIONEER 3–DOT NOTES (14–12, 10–10 CCAA): East Bay snapped a 4–game losing streak with a 62–51 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday night…Morgan Greene (So./F) ranks among CCAA Player of the Year candidates, averaging 16.1 points (No. 5 CCAA) and a CCAA–leading 13.0 rebounds per game…Elayshia Woolridge (Jr./G) adds 13.4 ppg (No. 10 CCAA) and 3.5 apg (No. 5 CCAA).
WHEN LAST WE MET: CSUMB attempted a season–high 35 shots in the first half, but made just seven (20 percent). East Bay, meanwhile, shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 40–14 lead at the break en route to a 65–36 win Dec. 2 in The Kelp Bed.
Aubri Smith led CSUMB with eight points and three steals. Four different Otters led on the glass with six boards each. Elayshia Woolridge scored 15 points and Morgan Greene has a 12–point, 12–rebound double–double for the Pioneers.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: Cal State L.A. used a big third quarter rally to earn a come–from–behind 68–57 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday Feb. 10 in The Kelp Bed. CSUMB got strong games from seniors
Courtney Keaton (15 pts, 10 reb, 3 stls) and
Aubri Smith (14 pts, 5 asst, 3 stls), who helped the Otters lead until midway through the third period. L.A. nearly caught the Otters twice before Rebeccah DiRegolo's layup gave the Golden Eagles a 37–35 lead they wouldn't relinquish late in the third quarter.
SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE: Saturday's game versus Cal State L.A. marked the final collegiate home games for seven Otters:
Jessie Evans,
Christine Golfo,
Emily Hardin,
Courtney Keaton,
Aubri Smith,
Alexa Sperling and
Vai Thompson.
ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE… Courtney Keaton posted her second consecutive double–double and her seventh double–double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds Saturday night versus Cal State L.A. They are the most double–doubles by an Otter since
Brittani Jefferson posted eight during the 2012–13 season. Johanna Mahoney set the CSUMB record with 11 double–doubles during the 2003–04 season.
ON THE REBOUND… By leading the team with 10 boards Saturday night,
Courtney Keaton has now led CSUMB in rebounding in 11 consecutive games and in 22 of 25 games overall in 2017–18.
THE 450 CLUB: By going over 450 career points last week,
Courtney Keaton becomes just the fifth player in CSUMB history to amass more than 450 career points and rebounds.
TWICE IN THE TOP 10… Aubri Smith passed five assists Saturday versus Cal State L.A. to tie current Gonzaga University Head Coach Lisa Mispley for No. 6 on the Otter career list with 168 helpers. With three steals in the game, she jumped to No. 10 on that career list with 90.
OTTERS AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Aubri Smith's 12.5 ppg ranks her No. 12 on the CCAA scoring chart as CSUMB's top scorer leading into the final two games of the 2017–18 season. Other Otters amongst the leaders include: REBOUNDING: No. 4
Courtney Keaton (9.8 rpg); STEALS: No. 7
Courtney Keaton (1.8 spg), No. 10
Aubri Smith (1.7 spg); BLOCKS: No. 11
Courtney Keaton (0.8 bpg); ASSISTS: No. 13
Aubri Smith (2.8 apg).
WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? The final five minutes have been all but irrelevant. CSUMB is 12–1 when leading after 35 and 0–37 when trailing after 35 dating back to the 2015–16 season. FYI, the Otters and Pomona were tied with 5:00 left in MB's Jan. 27 victory.
THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With Jan. 20's 73–47 win at San Francisco State, CSUMB is now 41–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 15 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
GO OTTERS!
