Short–Handed Otters Fall In Surprise Home Opener To Holy Names

77–71 setback features six ties, 22 lead changes; Jahvon Johnson leads all scorers with 19 points

SEASIDE, Calif. — Expecting the play on the road Thursday evening, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team got an unexpected home game when smoke from the Camp Fire forced its nonconference game with Holy Names to move from Oakland to The Kelp Bed. The change of venue didn't help on this night, however, as Holy Names took a 77–71 decision.

The game was much closer than even the final margin indicated. The teams played through six ties and 22 lead changes before the Hawks grabbed the lead for good at 66–65. HNU went 7–for–9 from the line down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) scored 15 of his game–high 19 points in the second half to lead three Otters in double figures. Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) added 12 points and six assists while Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) scored 10 with a team–leading six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Taylor Alonzo steal following an Otter rebound with 10 seconds remaining allowed Holy Names to run out the clock.

REBOUNDING ON THE DOWN LOW… The Otters grabbed just one offensive rebound Thursday versus Holy Names, breaking the school record for fewest offensive rebounds in a game. The previous mark was two against Cal Baptist on Dec. 20, 2002.

TOOLEY WITH THE SIX–PACK OF ASSISTS… Charlie Tooley passed for a career–high six assists Thursday versus Holy Names. The six assists are the most by an Otter since Jahvon Johnson passed six at Cal State L.A. on Nov. 17, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 19; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 6; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 6; BLOCKS: Kyle Johnson 2; STEALS: Joseph Bosetti/Charlie Tooley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the weekend by hosting Dominican University Saturday (Nov. 17) for a 3 p.m. matinee.
