Second Half Run Lifts Dominican Over Otter Men, 82–73

Koen Sapwell scores 19 points to lead all scorers for MB

SEASIDE, Calif. — Visiting Dominican University used a big run midway through the second half to break open a close game en route to an 82–73 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) came off the bench to lead both teams with 19 points for CSUMB. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and Chris Turner (Pioneer HS/DeAnza College) also reached double figures with 11 points apiece.

It was a 1–point game at 51–50 inside of 13 minutes to play when Dominican needed less than two minutes to go on a 10–0 run and push its lead to double digits at 61–50. Sapwell scored five consecutive points to pull the Otters back to with six before another Dominican run, this one 13–2, pushed the Penguins to their biggest lead at 74–57.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Xavier Williams knocked down a jumper with 1:11 remaining to give Dominican an 82–68 lead.

ON THE REBOUND… Rebounding has been a hot–and–cold proposition for the Otters through four games. After grabbing a CSUMB record low one offensive rebound Thursday night versus Holy Names, the Otter roared back to pull down a season–high 16 offensive boards Saturday versus Dominican. That effort helped the Otters out–rebound the Penguins 38–32 for the game.

YOUTH WILL BE SERVED… With just one senior on the roster, young players figure to feature prominently throughout the 2018–19 season. Saturday afternoon, the Otters started three freshmen: Kyle Johnson, J.R. Schilling and Jared Williams. In total, five freshmen played 64 minutes.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 19; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 3; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/Kyler Warren 1; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin CCAA play Thanksgiving weekend by traveling to the other Bay area to tackle San Francisco State Friday (Nov. 23) at 7:30 p.m.
