CARSON, Calif. -- After getting a brief break from CCAA play, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball returned to conference action on Saturday on the road against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
CSUMB started fast in game one by scoring a run in the first inning followed by a run in the fourth to grab a 2-0 lead. However, the shutdown inning eluded the Otters pitching staff as CSUMB allowed CSUDH to score three times in the bottom of the fourth leading to a 2-3 deficit. A 2-run home run in the fifth by
Hayden Duer gave CSUMB back a lead, 4-3, but allowed the tying run to the Toros in the late innings to force extra innings. After CSUMB could not cash in on a scoring opportunity in the tenth, the Toros took advantage of a bases loaded situation to drive in the winning run on a close infield single to hand MB a 5-4 loss.
Dominguez Hills jumped on MB starting pitcher,
Jorge Alvarado, by scoring in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. CSUMB answered with three runs in the third but promptly allowed two runs to the Toros in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to fall behind 7-3. The Otters had chances to climb back into the game including a bases-loaded no-out situation in the seventh inning, but were unable to find the timely hit leading to the eventual 7-3 loss.
LEADING OFF... Zakry Taylor had a nice day at the plate going a combine 3-for-4 at the plate with three walks and a run scored
ON DECK... This marks the first back-to-back losses for the Otters since falling to Cal State San Marcos and Fresno Pacific on March 5 and 7. This will be the first series loss since falling in two of three to UC San Diego on March 11-12.
IN THE HOLE... There were positives out of the bullpen on Saturday as usual starter,
Bryan Granger, pitched two blemish free innings in game one as he makes he way back from injury.
THE LAST WORD... "Today was a combination of Dominguez Hills playing well and our club not playing our best baseball. We struggled to produce offensively when we had opportunities and we had a hard time making a pitch when we need to make a pitch. Combine that with a poor defensive performance and you get the day's results."
Head Coach Walt White
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... Monterey Bay and CSUDH will wrap up the 3-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon.
GO OTTERS!
