SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- After splitting Friday's doubleheader, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball looked to put its mark on the series during Saturday's twinbill. San Francisco State got the best of CSUMB in game one, winning 6-4. With the pressure on in game two, a pitcher's duel ensued until the top of the seventh when the Otter bats exploded for six runs en route to a 6-0 win and split of the 4-game series.
The Otters started quickly in game one by plating two runs in the top of the first inning, however, SF State responded with two runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings. CSUMB attempted a comeback for the third consecutive game, but fell two runs short in a 6-4 loss.
Game two featured a pitcher's duel between CSUMB's
Ryan Arambula and SFSU's Dillon Houser. Both pitcher's pitched into the seventh inning in the seven-inning game, but Houser could not outlast the Otter offense in the top of the seventh. After plating a run on an error, the Otters loaded the bases for a
Myles Hager grand slam to put CSUMB up 5-0. Monterey Bay scored once more to take a 6-0 lead before Arambula completed his complete-game shutout in the 6-0 victory.
LEADING OFF... Ryan Arambula matched last weeks outing by lasting seven innings, but this time it was for a complete-game shutout in a key win to split the series. Arambula allowed three hits, no runs in seven innings with three strikeouts. He improves his record to 5-2 on the season.
ON DECK... The Otters made a habit out of scoring in the last inning of games this series, scoring a combine 14 runs in the final inning including four in a 9-6 comeback win in game one of the series on Friday and six in today's series finalé.
IN THE HOLE... CSUMB is now 23-15, 15-11 and still holds a half game lead on Cal State East Bay after the Pioneers split a 4-game series with Sonoma State over the weekend.
THE LAST WORD... "Arambula was really good today and he needed to be just that as the SF State pitcher kept us off balance through 6. We finally broke through with a crooked number in the 7th to put the game away. Our league is so challenging that you need to play your best to win a series regardless of who you play. We played really well in spots, but when we didn't, SF State took advantage. It will be nice to get back home after being on the road for the last seven games."
-Head Coach Walt White
