SEASIDE, Calif. -- Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) did it in game one and
Jake Chutney (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills HS) did it in game two as the two senior relievers had arguably thier best days on the mound this season helping the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team to two big wins over UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
Cox relieved
Gabe Katich (San Jose / Mount Pleasant HS) who allowed three runs early on but still made it through six innings in game one. Cox, however, was dominant. The senior right hander allowed just one hit in two and two–thirds innings en route to his first win (1-0) of the season.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the third, MB got on the board due to a fielding error by the UCSD shortstop. Then in the fourth, down 1-3,
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) drove his ninth home run of the season over the left field wall for a two–run shot to tie the game at 3-3. Cox came on in with an out in the seventh and got two strikeouts to end the Triton threat.
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) drove in what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as CSUMB coasted behind Cox to the 4-3 win in game one.
Game two did not have the same nail biting feel to it as CSUMB plated five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Despite only lasting three innings, CSUMB started
Jared Koenig (Aptos HS) was in the good hands of Chutney (2-0). The senior reliever allowed one run on three hits in four innings of work to earn his second win of 2016.
The Otter offense gave Chutney some help, tacking on three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Duer 2-run double off the wall that led to the 8–2 victory.
CSUMB is now 28-13, 17-12 CCAA and is in a tie atop the CCAA North Division standings with Chico State. Monterey Bay and UC San Diego will wrap up the 3-game series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
GO OTTERS!
