OAKLAND, Calif.-- The Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team traveled north to face off against Holy Names University during their CCAA bye week. A large second inning put the Otters in a deep hole that they were not able to get out of, falling on Friday 12–4 at Laney College.
After
Avery Ortiz (Stevenson Ranch, Calif. / West Ranch HS) recorded a scoreless first inning, the Hawks jumped on CSUMB pitching and plated eight runs, highlighted by a two–run homerun by Sean Carrington in the second inning.
CSUMB got on the board in the seventh inning with three runs, featuring a two–run double by
Myles Hager (Tarzana, Calif / Chaminade College Prep), to cut the deficit to five runs. However, HNU came back in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own to put the Otters in an 11–3 hole. Each team traded runs in the eighth as well, leading to an eventual score of 12–4.
Hager led the Otter offense with two RBIs in a 1–for–5 effort.
Josh Heinz () had a two–hit day at the plate while
Jordan Zaragoza () drew two walks in a pinch hitting role.
The series will shift to Seaside for the second and final game of the short series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
