CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Day two of the Convergence Tournament pitted the Cal State Monterey Bay Women's Water Polo team against the host Claremont–Mudd–Scripps and Pomona–Pitzer. After an 8–7 win over CMS, the Otters fell to Pomona–Pitzer, 10–4,, on their way to a split of day two action.
GAME 1 | CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 8, CLAREMONT–MUDD–SCRIPPS 7The Otters came out hot, going up 5–1 after the first half of play, lead by
Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) who netted two goals in the first 16 minutes of play.,
CSUMB was outscored 2–3 in the third quarter but held a 7–4 lead thanks to goals by
Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood HS) and
Samantha Whitecotton (Roseville, Calif. / Woodcreek HS) who put the Otters up three scores heading into the final quarter. While the Athenas scored three times in the fourth quarter, Veloso's third goal of the game was the deciding factor, giving the Otters the 8–7 win.
In addition to Veloso's hat trick, five other Otters contributed a goal in the win. For CMS offensively, seven different players recorded a single goal.
GAME 2 | POMONA–PITZER 10, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 4Pomona–Pitzer got off to a fast start in the final game of the tournament, putting CSUMB in a 0–3 hole after the first half. The Otters got on the board in the third quarter on a goal by Palmer, her first of two in the quarter.,
The Otters trailed 2–6 going into the fourth quarter and were outscored 2–4 as the goals by
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford Senior HS) and
Kristine Groteguth (Turlock HS) were not enough to close the gap handing CSUMB the 4–10 loss.
For the Sagehens, Alyssa Woodward, Hope Grant, and Mahalia Prater-Fahey each scored twice in the win.
The Otters move to 4–11 on the season. Monterey Bay will be back in action Sunday, March 8, when they visit Concordia–Irvine to wrap up their Southern California trip. First sprint is set for 9 a.m.
