SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team heads to Southern California this weekend looking to avenge a pair of early season home losses to Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego. The Otters will take on Cal Poly Friday (Jan. 30) in Kellogg Gym and UCSD Saturday (Jan. 31) in RIMAC Arena.
Tipoff both nights will be at 5:30 p.m. as the openers of men's/women's doubleheader action. Fans who can't make it to the games may listen to Rob Ponce's live calls on www.OtterAthletics.com. Both Cal Poly and UCSD will provide free live stats and video streams. The appropriate links may be found at
Gameday Central.
BRONCO 3–DOT NOTES (12–4, 10–2 CCAA): The Broncos inserted themselves right back into the thick of the CCAA race with a huge sweep of Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino last weekend…they handed Humboldt its first conference loss of the season and pulled to within a game of the Lumberjacks in the CCAA race with 10 games to play…Arizona State transfer Jada Blackwell leads the Broncos and the CCAA in scoring at 18.9 ppg…fellow senior Ariel Marsh is No. 3 in the CCAA at 18.4 ppg…LMU transfer Ashley Lovett and Blackwell rank 6–7 in the CCAA rebounding race at 8.1 & 7.3 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: Jenna Bandy's career night wasn't enough to slow down defending West Region champion Cal Poly as the Broncos raced to a 36–19 halftime lead en route to a 78–61 win in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 6. Bandy scored 28 points, career high and the No. 3 mark in CSUMB history, to lead CSUMB. Ariel Marsh and Ashley Lovett had 18 apiece for the Broncos.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: Perhaps feeling the after effects of Friday's overtime win versus Stanislaus, the Otters appeared to hit the wall midway through the first half of Saturday's 68–53 loss to Chico State.
Jenna Bandy scored 21 points and
McKenna Hill pulled down 14 boards.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: Julie Heurung pulled down a then school–record 13 rebounds to lead the Otters to a 64–52 win at Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 30, 2010. It also was CSUMB's first–ever win in Fitzpatrick Arena.
CALL HER MRS. CLEAN: Sophomore forward
McKenna Hill had a huge night cleaning the glass Saturday versus Chico State, pulling down a career–high 14 rebounds. Only Julie Heurung (who twice grabbed 16 rebounds in a single game), ever recorded more boards in an Otter uniform.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE: McKenna Hill earned the individual accolades, but she was just a part of the greatest team rebounding weekend in CSUMB history. The Otters recorded a team–record 55 rebounds in the Friday win over Stanislaus. They came back to pull down 49 Saturday versus Chico State, the No. 8 mark in the Otter record book. The 104 boards are CSUMB's best 2–game total ever.
THE CLUB IS GETTING CROWDED: It seems that every week sees a new member join the Otter Double–Double Club. Freshman forward
Emma Keenan became the fourth Otter to add her name to the membership roll with career highs of 20 points and 10 rebounds in last Friday's win over Stanislaus (
Jenna Bandy,
Jazmine Johnson and
Alexa Sperling are the others). The quartet already has combined for more double–doubles (5) than the team posted all last season (4).
IN CASE YOU'RE CURIOUS, CLUB EDITION: The Otters have tied the school record for most individuals recording double–doubles in a season with four. The mark was set twice, last in 2014 (
Mykayla Harris,
Holly Holcomb,
Ashley Morgan,
Alexous Robinson).
JAZMINE FROM THE BLOCK: With her 19th block of the season last week versus Stanislaus,
Jazmine Johnson moved to within two blocks of Denisha Profit, who owns the No. 9 spot (21 in 2006) and No. 8 (22 in 2007) spots on the Otter season list. Julie Heurung set the CSUMB record with 39 in 2011.
OTTERS AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: The following Otters enter this week's action ranked among the CCAA leaders: SCORING: No. 8
Jenna Bandy (13.6 ppg); FG%: No. 4
Jazmine Johnson (.536); FT%: No. 1
Jenna Bandy (.909); REBOUNDS: No. 9
Jazmine Johnson (6.8 rpg), No. 9
McKenna Hill (6.7 rpg); ASSISTS: No. 8
Stephanie Sack (3.2 apg); STEALS: No. 4
Jenna Bandy (2.1 spg); BLOCKS: No. 5
Jazmine Johnson (1.1 bpg).
WORKING OVERTIME: With their 63–59 overtime win last week versus Stanislaus, the Otters improved to 5–3 in overtime games at the NCAA level. It was CSUMB's first overtime win since defeating Sonoma State 64–59 (1 ot) on Dec. 3, 2011. CSUMB has played only two Division II seasons (2006 & 2012) without playing at least one overtime game.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With the 84–80 win at San Francisco State on Jan. 3, CSUMB is now 35–2 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Prior to the 2013 regular season finale (an 84–75 overtime loss to Chico State), the Otters hadn't scored 70 in defeat since a 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.
GO OTTERS!
