Otters Slide Past Broncos, Take 9-0 Record Into 2011

POMONA, Calif.
– Senior #Julie Heurung# had 13 points and eight rebounds as the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball held off Cal Poly Pomona, 54-48, on Thursday afternoon in a conference showdown at the Kellogg Gym.

The Otters improved to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action while the Broncos (6-2, 3-1 CCAA) picked up their first conference loss.

Senior #Michelle Santizo# dished out a career-best seven assists on top of a game-high 10 rebounds.  Senior #LaShawn Johnson# connected on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to finish with 13 points.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Johnson at 8:26 gave the Otters their biggest lead of the game at 46-32 and Heurung's layup 30 seconds later extended it to 16 (48-32).  

The Broncos came roaring back to cut the CSUMB lead to 50-45 on a pair of free throws by La'kenya Simon West with 1:52 remaining.

With 22 second on the clock, Heurung's two free-throws gave the Otters a 52-45 advantage.

Once again, CPP came back with a 3-pointer by Simon West to make it 52-48.

#Erika Ward#'s pair of free throws clinched guaranteed CSUMB's ninth victory of the season, 54-48.

The Otters defense held CPP's leading scorer Reyana Colson to only nine points in her 26 minutes of play.

CSUMB travels to San Francisco State on Tuesday, Jan. 7 fo a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
