SEASIDE --- After a fairly easy victory in the morning against Concordia, the Otters had to battle hard in the afternoon and eventually succumbed to Cal State East Bay, losing 10-8, splitting their two matches on Saturday in their home pool.
It took 21 seconds for #Chelsea Laning# to give the Otters the lead against Concordia University and CSUMB never looked back, winning 12-8. Laning, #Chloe McRae# and #Kellie Koorndyk# each scored two goals for the Otters.
CSUMB scored the first three goals of the game before coach
Gary Figueroa started to use his subs liberally. Nine different players scored; starting goalie #Jenna Beer# made 11 saves in the first three periods before giving way to #Kristen Prosser#, who finished with four.
At halftime, CSUMB led by just 5-4, but Laning made it 6-4 just 41 seconds into the second half. #Christy Thompson# and #Nikki Smart# would score later in the third period to make it 8-4 and the lead was insurmountable for Concordia.
Although CSUMB defeated both teams 8-7 previously this year, Saturday's afternoon match Cal State East Bay game was a different story. The Otters never led and trailed by as many as four before closing the gap late.
CSUMB trailed 4-2 after the first period, but goals by Laning and Smart tied the score at 4 with 6:20 left in the first half. Unfortunately, East Bay got those goals back in the final minutes of the half and led 6-4 at the break. East Bay would increase that lead to 8-4 early in the second half before CSUMB mounted a comeback to make it 8-6 going into the fourth.
The Otters were never able to get back within a goal, though, as East Bay seemed to have an answer for every CSUMB move. Beer finished with 15 saves. Smart led the Otters with three goals. #Stephanie Salvi#, two goals, was the only other Otter to score more than.
The Otters' next game is against Hartwick University at home on March 27. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
