Simon Surges to Seventh Place Finish In Vegas

Otters also beat several ranked teams to finish seventh

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) surged 11 spots up the leaderboard to a seventh place finish at the Desert Classic Tournament Tuesday on the Boulder Creek Golf Club outside of Las Vegas.

Björken carded seven birdies and an eagle as part of his third-round 66 to finish tournament play at 7-under 209. It marked the second time in eight days that He shot 66, his season low, en route to his third top 10 finish in seven events this season.

Led by the senior Swede, the Otters placed seventh in the star-studded field that featured 14 nationally-ranked teams, including six of the top 10 in NCAA Division II play. No. 26 CSUMB earned head-to-head wins against No. 6 Oklahoma Christian, No. 17 St. Mary's (Texas) and No. 25 Missouri-St. Louis.

Björken wasn't the only Otter to go low Tuesday as fellow senior Swede Wilhelm Berg von Linde posted his second consecutive red number, finishing at 2-under 70 for the day. Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) and Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) gave CSUMB its final two scoring rounds, shooting 73 and 74 respectively.

In addtion to Björken's seventh-place finish, Kimberling earned a spot in the Top 20 by placing 19th. Liam Allder (39th) and Berg von Linde (41st) also earned spots in the top half of the 100-golfer field.

"This week was a lot of fun traveling with the five seniors," said CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "These guys are the ones that we restarted with after COVID and it is great being with them. The field this week was amazing and we played solid. We had contributions from everyone so hopefully we can use this momentum and keep building."

Top-ranked Colorado Christian took the team title at 28-under 836. CSUMB finished 16 strokes back in eighth place at 12-under.

Baptiste Touchard of St. Mary's claimed medalist honors with a 3-round score of 12-under.

The Otters will take a few weeks off before returning to action at the Sonoma State Invitational Mar. 24–25 in Sonoma.
