Humboldt Heats Up In Second Half For Win

Blake Jones' double-double not enough for Otters in 81-70 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played a strong first half, but couldn't sustain that momentum after intermission as visiting Cal Poly Humboldt rallied for an 81–70 win Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

Freshman Michael Mora (Palo Alto) and senior Blake Jones (Canberra, Aust.) led the Otters to a 40–34 lead at the break, with Mora scoring 10 points and Jones adding six points and seven rebounds. But Humboldt scored the first six points after the break as the game became a back-and-forth battle for the next 10 minutes.

The Lumberjacks finally took the lead for good when a pair of Kalib LaCount free throws broke a 51–51 tie midway through the half. The Otters kept it close down the stretch, but Humboldt went 7-of-8 from the line over the final two minutes to ease away.

Jones led CSUMB with his second collegiate double-double, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Mora and Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) each scored 13. Ariya Briscoe (Portland, Ore./West Valley College) added season highs of 12 points and four assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… As is tradition, we use the Bill James Safe Lead Formula in this space to determine when the game was over statistically. Saturday's game was over when Jamal Briscoe sank a pair from the line with 44 seconds remaining to account for the final points.

A HALF IS NOT A WHOLE: The Otters have either led (6 times) or been tied (once) in seven of their 11 games this season.

OTTERS ON THE REBOUNDS: The Otters out-rebounded Humboldt 33–32 Saturday. They have won the battle of the boards in 8 of 11 games this season.

FREE THROWS ARE COSTLY: They may call them free, but shots from the charity stripe proved costly for the Otters Saturday versus Cal Poly Humboldt. The Lumberjacks made an Otter opponent season-high 24 free throws (in 29 attempts) to fuel their 11-point victory. The Otters with 9-for-13 from the stripe.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Blake Jones, 15; REBOUNDS: Blake Jones, 11; ASSISTS: Ariya Briscoe 4; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Blake Jones 1; STEALS: Ariya Briscoe 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their next four games, beginning Thursday (Jan. 9) at Cal State East Bay. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the second game of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
