SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team rebounded from a sluggish game one loss, 5- 1, to rally and take the nightcap, 9-6. After the doubleheader, the Otters move to 19-11 overall and 15-7 in CCAA play.
GAME 1 | CSULA 5 – CSUMB 1
CSUMB could not overcome their lowest offensive output on the season as they scored one run on three hits and left 13 on base in a 5-1 loss on the series opener.
KW Quilici tallied two of CSUMB's three hits as
Sergio Solis tallied the other Otter knock.
Nate Rohlicek (3-2) had his longest outing of the season, going eight innings, but was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs – two earned on nine hits, while striking out three.
Quilici got the Otters on the board in the opening frame, cashing in a two-out single through the right side to plate
JJ Engman.
The Golden Eagles then scored two in the second to secure the win and added two more in the sixth and their final run in the eighth.
GAME 2 | CSUMB 9 – CSULA 6
The Otters bounced back in a big way in game two as CSUMB scored early and often in game two to hold on to a 9-6 victory.
Brady Miguel,
Cole Murchison,
Nico Hartojo and
Matthew Oliden collected two hit each. Miguel drove in three and
Jaden Sheppard smashed a big three-run homer.
Vince Cicolello was credited with his first win of the season as he tossed 2 1/3 of one-hit relief and
Aidan Lee tallied his first save, striking out three in the final inning.
It didn't take long for the Otters to make up for their dormant first game as the bats came alive in the first inning. CSUMB scored four runs on three hits to take the early 4-0 lead.
The first three batters in the Otter lineup scored and Hartojo supplied the big hit with a two-run double.
CSULA tacked on one in the second but in the bottom of the third, Sheppard uncorked a three-run shot well over the wall in left-center to expand the Otter lead to 7-1.
After the Golden Eagles scored five runs in the fourth inning, primarily on miscues, to pull within one, the Otters got an insurance run to make the score 8-6. Miguel drove a deep sac-fly to left to plate
Chase Lindemann.
The Otters tacked on their final run of the game as
Brady Miguel laid down the perfect bunt down the third base line with two outs to score Lindemann.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow. First pitch has been moved up to 10:45 a.m.
