Otters Start Fast to Race Past Stanislaus State in Series Opener

CSUMB takes down Stanislaus State, 11-5, Friday evening

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 20-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team used a seven-run first inning to pull away from Stanislaus State, 11-5, Friday evening at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB improves to 14-7 overall and 10-3 in conference play.

The Otters racked up eight of their 16 total hits in the first inning as five batters tallied two or more knocks in the game.

The top of the lineup accounted for six hits as the 1-2 punch of Chase Lindemann and JJ Engman tallied three hits apiece. Cole Murchison and Nico Hartojo also had three-hit games, while KW Quilici batted 2-for-4 with two RBI on a double and a triple. Hartojo recorded a game-high three RBI.

Nate Rohlicek (3-1) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out nine in his six-inning start. Daniel Flores came in and allowed an unearned run on three hits in three innings to earn his first save of the year.

The Otters set the tone early as they plated seven runs on eight hits in the opening frame. CSUMB batted around as Lindemann and Engman collected two hits in the inning. Quilici supplied the big hit as he smacked a two-run triple and then promptly came in to score.

After the Warriors tacked on three runs, the Otters scored again in the fifth when Brady Miguel hit a sac-fly to center to plate Engman.

The Otters added insurance with a pair of runs in the sixth. Hartojo opened the scoring by driving in Murchison and then Hartojo capped off the inning by moving the score to 10-4 on a Lindemann groundout. A sac-fly off the bat of Hartojo gave the Otters their 11th and final run of the ballgame.

The two teams will meet for a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
