Otters Drop Series Finale to Azusa Pacific, 3-1

CSUMB tallied 10 hits but couldn’t push runs across

SEASIDE, Calif. – Despite 10 hits, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball (3-1) team was only able to manufacture one run in a 3-1 series finale loss to Azusa Pacific (1-3) on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Cougars used a two-out, two-strike single off the bat of Carson Collett to plate two runs in the sixth inning to secure the 3-1 lead and eventual win.

Jaden Sheppard and Cole Murchison collected two hits apiece. Eight different Otter batters were credited with a hit on Saturday.

Daniel Flores started for CSUMB, tossing three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out two. Giovanni Costello was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs - two earned on one hit while striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.

The Otters scored their lone run of the contest when Nico Hartojo beat out an infield single to short to score JJ Engman.

CSUMB will remain at home as they welcome No. 21 Point Loma for a four-game series. The two teams will open the matchup on Thursday, Feb. 8. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
