Pomona Holds Otters At Bay, 72-63

Johnson, Tengan lead CSUMB with 14 points apiece

POMONA, Calif. — Cal Poly Pomona earned a little separation late in the first half than held Cal State Monterey Bay at bay over the final 20 minutes to earn a 73–64 win Thursday night in Kellogg Arena.

Javon Johnson (De la Salle HS) and Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) led the Otters with 14 points apiece. Charles Johnston returned after a 1-game absence due to illness and shared team–high rebounding honors with Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) at five.

The lead changed hands six times in the first half before the Broncos were able to claim a 40–32 advantage at the break. CSUMB pulled to within four in the second half, but Pomona kept its advantage in the 10-point range down the stretch as the Otters couldn't find their way over the hump.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a Brandon Porter basket made it 72–57 Pomona with 1:32 reamining.

REBOUNDING RECORD WATCH… With five rebounds Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona, Charles Johnston moved to within 19 boards of the CSUMB single–season record for rebounds (273) set by Joe Mitchell during the 2008–09 season. He emnters the final two games averaging 10.6 rebounds per game.

TRIPLE 300s… For just the second time ever, that Otters will claim three 300+ point scorers in a season for two consecutive seasons after Jaden Tengan (306) passed the 300–point plateau with 14 points Thursday at Cal Poly Pomona. He is joined by Jailen Nelson (339) and Charles Johnston (325). Last season Levi Frankland (444), Joe Wall (349) and Nelson (330) were members of that exclusive club.

The only other time the Otters claimed three 300+ point scorers in consecutive seasons came when they did it three times in a row between 2005–06 and 2007–08.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Javon Johnson/Jaden Tengan 14. REBOUNDS: Joey Bilello/Charles Johnston 5. ASSISTS: Ameere Britton/Jailen Nelson 3. BLOCKS: Joey Bilello 2. STEALS: none.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their Southern California trip at defending CCAA champion Cal State San bernardino Saturday in Coussoulis Arena. The Otters men will tip at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.

GO OTTERS!
