Huge Rally Falls One Point Short Against Toros, 83-82

Otters come back from 21 down to tie in the second half

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from a 21–point deficit with less than 17 minutes remaining to tie CCAA–leading Cal State Dominguez Hills, only to see the comeback fall one point short in an 83–82 defeat Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Dominguez Hills led 50–29 with 16:50 left in regulation when the comeback began. It took the Otters less than 10 minutes to erase that deficit, tying the game at 61–61 on a Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) 3–point play with 7:35 on the clock.

The Toros used a quick 8–0 run to regain control at 74–66 inside the final four minutes. But the Otters wouldn't go away, pulling to within two twice in the final minute. Down three with the ball and 10.1 seconds left, they had one final chance to tie, but Jaden Tengan's (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) 3–pointer wouldn't fall.

Charles Johnston put the rebound back in to make it 83–82 with 1.5 seconds left before the Toros successfully inbounded the ball to run out the clock.

Tengan led all scorers with 23 points. Johnston just missed a record–tying 10th double–double, finishing with eight points and 18 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when the clock hit all naughts to seal the final score.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN, PART I… The Otters set a school record by attempting 43 3–pointers Thursday night versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. Their previous high was 42 at Cal State San Bernardino on Jan. 10, 2019.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN, PART II… The Otters made 14 3–pointers Thursday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, good for the No. 7 spot in the CSUMB record book. They were the most 3–point makes by the team since they tied the school record with 18 in the previously mention game at San Bernardino.

JOHNSTON ON THE REBOUND… Charles Johnston pulled down 18 rebounds Thursday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. That mark ties for No. 5 in the Otter record book. He joins Richard Jenkins as the only Otters ever to grab 18 or more rebounds in a game twice. He is the only Otter ever to do it twice in one season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 23; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 18; ASSISTS: Charles Johnston/Jaden Tengan 4; BLOCKS: Jordan Archie/Joey Bilello 1; STEALS: Joe Wall 2.

THE LAST WORD… "While there are no real moral victories, and tonight will go down as a loss, I sincerely hope our guys know that the effort, energy and teamwork they played with tonight is a winning formula. Confidence is a funny thing, if we allow it to be. The way we played in tonight's loss could be something that propels us to future wins." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief homestand by hosting Cal State L.A. Saturday (Feb. 3) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
