Huge Comeback Falls Just Short At Otter Invite

CSUMB shoots tournament-low 279 to finish second

October 15, 2024

SEASIDE, CALIF. — Cal State Monterey Bay made an epic comeback, pulling to with a stoke after trailing by as many as 15, before Cal State East Bay held on to take the team title at the 2024 Otter Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Bayonet Golf Course.

East Bay finished 4-over 868 for the tournament. CSUMB was three strokes back at plus-7. Chico State (+10), Sonoma State (+14) and Colorado School of Mines (+21) rounded out the top five.

CSUMB went 9-under 279 in Tuesday's final round, the lowest round of the tournament for any team by four strokes. That charge got the Otters to within one stroke late before a pair of late birdies by East Bay's Ananjan Kaushik allowed the Pioneers to hang on for their third tournament win in three outings this season. Nevertheless, CSUMB was the only team to post a red number Tuesday.

All five Otters shot at or under par, with senior Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) leading the quintet at 4-under. Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) both went 2-under. Sophomore Tony Tao (Eastvale/Western Christian HS) closed the scoring with a 1-under 71.

Wilhelm Berg von Linde (Stockholm, Sweden) shot even par Tuesday and tied with Björken for CSUMB's best finish in sixth place at even par 216 for the 54-hole event. Kimberling tied for 17th at 3-over while Allder placed 21st at plus-5.

Santa Clara University's Jack Hayden, playing as an individual, took medalist honors at 5-under 211. He held off a trio of challengers a minus-4.

CSUMB returns to action next week with a pair of tournament in Hawaii, beginning Sunday with the Dennis Rose Invitational Oct. 20–22 at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course on the Big Island.
