Johnston and Nelson Help Otters Tame Cougars

Charles Johnston scores 23, Jailen Nelson has 21 in 93-88 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The duo of Charles Johnston and Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) caught fire Saturday afternoon to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 93–88 win over Cal State San Marcos in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB improved to 5–7 overall and 3–4 in the CCAA with the win. San Marcos dropped to 5–8 and 4–3.

Johnston posted his fifth double–double of the season, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds while knocking down 10-of-11 from the floor. Nelson added his fourth 20–point game, chipping in 21 points to go along with a game–high seven assists.

Both teams burst out of the game red-hot, with the Otters shooting 55 percent from the field in the first half and the Cougars connecting on 60 percent of their 3–point attempts. With both offenses in top form, neither team was able to gain separation.

San Marcos led by as many as six in the first half and the Otters led by seven twice in the second half. Nevertheless, the game wasn't decided until Joe Wall (Portland/Jesuit HS) knocked down a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining in regulation.

In addition to Johnston and Nelson, Wall scored 13 points and Javon Johnson chipped in 10 for the Otters.

Edwyn Collins led all scorers with 29 points for San Marcos while Charlie Henderson scored 26.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Joe Wall made a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining to account for the game's final points.

JOHNSTON PLAYS THE PERCENTAGES… Charles Johnston entered Saturday's game against Cal State San Marcos ranked No. 3 in the nation in field goal percentage, converting at a 71 percent clip. The Aussie sophomore improved on that lofty number by shooting 91 percent (10-of-11) in the 93–88 victory. His only miss came from 3–point range. He was 2-of-3 from beyond the arc Saturday.

WHO SAID BIG MEN CAN'T SHOOT? Saturday's game between San Marcos and CSUMB featured three of the CCAA's top shooting big men. CSUMB's Charles Johnston and Joey Bilello combined to go 3-for-4 from long range while San Marcos center Charlie Henderson connected on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

NELSON MOVES INTO TOP 20… Jailen Nelson's 21–point game in Saturday's 93–88 win over Cal State San Marcos vaulted him up to No. 20 on the Otter career scoring list with 635 points. He passed Mike Miller (615 from 2003–04) and Steve Monreal (634 from 2008–09). Next up is Mateo Jones in 19th place with 656 points.

Johnston vaulted all the way from No. 25 to No. 19 with 261 rebounds. He passed Dante Green (2007–09), James Albert (2010–13), Ryan Nitz (2014–16), Joe Bosetti (2018–20) and Will Brown (2004–05) on Saturday.

THE LAST WORD… ""If you made it to the game today or watched online, you got to see two teams executing offense at a high level and a few key individuals really making plays for their teams. The thing I loved the most for our team is how much fun they had playing the game; how they supported each other when it wasn't going as well; and how they made plays down the stretch to win it."" – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their longest driving road trip of the season Thursday (Jan. 18) when they head up U.S. 101 to tackle Cal Poly Humboldt for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
