Pioneers Hold Off Otters In 82-66 Decision

Jailen Nelson leads CSUMB with 24 points, five assists

HAYWARD, Calif. — A surge late in the first half gave host Cal State East Bay separation and Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find a way back in an 82–66 loss Thursday night in Pioneer Gym.

Junior guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) led CSUMB with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Charles Johnston and freshman Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge HS) also reached double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively.

CSUMB stayed close early, but East Bay pulled away late in the first half, opening a 12-point lead at intermission. The Otters pulled to within seven early in the second half on a Nelson 3-pointer, but that was as close as they would get over the final 20 minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Dimtrios Klonaras made a pair of free throws to extend East Bay's lead to 78–58 with 4:09 remaining.

QUADRUPLE 20s… Jailen Nelson tied Charles Johnston for the team lead with his fourth 20–point game of the season Thursday at Cal State East Bay. His 24 points were two off his season–high scored in the opener against Central Washington on Nov. 10.

JOHNSTON'S DOUBLE–FIGURE STREAK CONTINUES… With 14 points Thursday at Cal State East Bay, Charles Johnston scored in double figures for the ninth consecutive game. That is the longest streak by an Otter this season. It's worth noting the Jailen Nelson extended his double–figures streak to six games Thursday night.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 24, REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 5. ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 5. BLOCKS: Charles Johnston 2. STEALS: Jailen Nelson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their trip to the other Bay area by playing a doubleheader at San Francisco State Saturday afternoon. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. followed by the men at 3 p.m.
