Strong Start Not Enough, as Otters Drop Opener to San Marcos 6-4

CSUMB collects nine hits, strands eight runners in tight contest with Cougar

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Needing just one win to clinch their second consecutive CCAA regular season title, Cal State Monterey Bay baseball fell just short in their series opener against Cal State San Marcos 6-4 Thursday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters built up a 4-1 lead through the first four innings, spearheaded by JJ Engman's (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) 2-for-2 start with a home run and three RBI. The Cougars responded, however, with three home runs to help them score five unanswered runs en route to the victory. The Otters would twice have the go-ahead run on third base, but couldn't pick up the pivotal hit to regain the lead in this contest.

Engman and Chase Lindermann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) led the Otters offensively, each collecting two hits. Of the Otters nine hits, only two were of the extra-base variety; Engman's two run home run and a Robbie Treto (Arleta/L.A. Piece College) double.

Ryan Platero (Hollister/MPC) picked up his second consecutive no-decision, tossing five innings, surrendering four runs on nine hits and fanning four, exiting the game tied at 4-4. Colby Harrison (Chico/Sacramento CC) continued to provide long relief out of the pen, tossing four innings, but was tagged for two late runs by the Cougars, suffering the loss in this one.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth by San Marcos closer Preston Kelly.

17 IN A ROW… With his sixth inning single, Brady Miguel has now extended his hitting streak to 17 games in a row, surpassing JJ Engman (16 games; Mar. 12 - Apr. 15) for longest hit streak of the season. Miguel now sits firmly in second place in the program record books with 181 career hits. He also has reached base in 41 consecutive games, good for the second longest on-base streak in program history.

MR. XBH… After logging his ninth double of the season today, Robbie Treto now has collected 14 extra base hits on the year out of his 20 total hits. He now joins Nico Hartojo and Drew Williams with a slugging percentage above .600 for the season.

FLAWLESS IN THE FIELD… The Otters continue to hold the title of best defensive team in the CCAA with another errorless performance in the field today. It was Monterey Bay's 23rd flawless field performance of the season, as they hold a team fielding percentage of .977.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Cougars will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12 P.M. Game one is slated for nine innings, while game two is slated for seven.
