Otter Rally Falls Just Short In Super Regional Opener

CSUMB nearly rebounds from 8-1 deficit before falling, 8-6 to San Bernardino

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 6 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay nearly pulled off another incredible comeback, only to fall just short as No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino held on for an 8–6 win in the opening game of the NCAA Division II Super Regional Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, San Bernardino (42–17) needs to win just one game Saturday to advance to the College World Series for the first time in program history. CSUMB (39–17) will need to win twice Saturday to advance.

As it did in the CCAA Tournament Championship game two weeks ago, San Bernardino raced to a big early lead, opening advantages of 6–0 and 8–1. As they did in that game, the Otters rallied, bringing the tying run to the plate in the eighth putting the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning before the rally ended.

A JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) homer leading off the fourth inning broke the ice for CSUMB. The Otters pulled to within 8–2 in the fifth on a Drew Williams (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) RBI knock.

Things got interesting in the sixth when Dominic Felice (San Benito HS/MPC) scored on a wild pitch before Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) hit a 2-run bomb to right to make it 8–5.

Sophomore righty Ryan Io (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) gave CSUMB a chance, tossing 4 1/3 innings of shutout, no-hit relief. But the Otter offense left five runners on base over the final three innings.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… San Bernardino reliever Benny Olguin got a pop fly to third to strand the tying runs in scoring position for the final out.

A GAME OF OPPORTUNITIES… Opportunities — and missed opportunities — told the tale Friday. CSUMB stranded 11 base runners, including five over the final three innings. San Bernardino left only four on base.

THE STREAKS GO ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann kept their impressive streaks of reaching base going Friday against Cal State San Bernardino. Miguel extended his streak to 45 games with a walk. Lindemann, meanwhile, went 2-for-5 with a home run to run his streak to 41 games.

THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST… The bottom third of the Otter lineup continues to make its presence felt. Dominic Felice, Kyle Guerra and Jacob Dressler finished Friday's win a combined 3-for-10 with a pair of walks, two runs and stolen base. The triumvirate is 19-for-44 (.432) with six doubles, a triple, 12 runs scored and nine RBI in NCAA Tournament play.

HOME RUN KINGS… With two Friday against Cal State San Bernardino, the Otters the program record for most home runs in a season with 59. The 2018 team hit 57 home runs.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: JJ Engman (7), Chase Lindemann (4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Cal State San Bernardino continue their best-of-3 series Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon. If the Otters win, a winner-take-all third game will take place 45 minutes later.
