Murchison’s Ninth Inning Blast Not Enough as Otters Fall to Cal State LA 9-8

Otters take the lead in the ninth, but fall on walk-off three run home run

LOS ANGELES –
The Otters dropped a back and forth contest with the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles 9-8 Friday evening at Reeder Field.

CSUMB fell behind 4-3 in the fourth, and played from behind for the rest of the game, until Cole Murchison (Toronto, ONT/West Valley College) blasted a three run shot in the ninth to push the Otters ahead 8-6. Unfortunately, that lead would not hold, as Cal State L.A. would respond by putting two on in the bottom half with two away before Andrew Tovar lifted a no doubt shot over the right field fence to win the game for the Golden Eagles.

Defending CCAA Player of the Week Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) continued on his latest hot-streak, going 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs. Murchison, Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS) and Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) also joined the multi-hit parade, each with a pair of hits.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Andrew Tovar blasted a three run home run over the right field fence to end the game in favor of Cal State L.A. 9-8.

HARTOJO WINS CLASH OF TITANS… Defending CCAA Player of the Week Nico Hartojo and defending CCAA Pitcher of the Week Owen Hunt made up the marquee matchup in this contest. It was Hartojo, however, who was able to win this heavyweight clash, blasting two home runs off of Hunt. Hartojo now has launched eight home runs this season, and 15 for his career, moving him into the top-five in program history.

LATE HEROICS… Despite the Otters falling in the bottom half of the ninth, their top half ABs showed true grit and determination as they fought to retake the lead for the first time since the second inning. Brady Miguel got things going with an infield single, followed by a Drew Williams double, his 18th of the season. With one away, Cole Murchison stepped up and bashed a long fly ball to the deepest part of the ballpark, clearing the elevated centerfield fence at Reeder Field to give the Otters a 9-8 lead.

A TWO TEAM RACE... With Sonoma State's upset victory over Stanislaus, the CCAA regular season title is now, officially a two team race between Cal State San Bernardino and the Otters. This does guarantee a first round bye for the Otters in the CCAA Tournament, as their magic number to clinch the CCAA regular season title remains at four with the Coyotes not playing this weekend.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be back in action at Reeder Field tomorrow for a doubleheader clash with the Golden Eagles. First pitch of game one is set for 1 PM.
