SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) was in peak form and his offense crushed three home runs as No. 18 Cal State Monterey Bay cruised to an 11–2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opener of a 4–game series Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Platero scattered four hits and struck out five over six scoreless innings to improve to 6–0 on the season. Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) hit a grand slam and Drew Williams (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) and Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) added home runs as CSUMB scored in each of its final five at bats to pull away.

The Otters improved to 26–11 overall and 23–6 in the CCAA as they inched closer to securing a return trip to the CCAA Tournament. The loss kept CSUDH (18–21, 13–16) one-half game behind Cal State East Bay for the sixth and final CCAA Tourney berth with 11 games remaining.

CSUMB jumped out in front in the fourth inning when Kyle Barileau (Valencia/Ohlone College) drove home Dominic Felice (San Benito HS/MPC) with an RBI single. Murchison extended the lead to 5–0 with a grand slam, his second homer of the season, in the fifth.

Hartojo hit his fifth homer, a solo shot, in the seventh inning. Williams added his CCAA leading 11th shot of 2023, a 3–run bomb, to close the scoring in the eighth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison's grand slam staked the Otters to a 5–0 lead in the fifth. The Otters extended their lead to 7–0 before a pair of late Toro runs broke the shutout bid.

A HOME RUN HIGH FIVE… With home runs from Cole Murchison, Nico Hartojo and Drew Williams in Friday's 11–2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Otters raised their season total to 36. That is tied for the No. 5 spot in the Otter record book. They need one more long ball to tie the 2007 squad for the No. 4 spot.

A WINNING RECORD, I GUARANTEE IT… With Friday's 11–2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Otters have guaranteed that they will finish with a winning record for the 10th consecutive season.

TOP 10 WILLIAMS… With four RBI Friday, Drew Williams moved into the Top 10 on the Otters single–season RBI list. With 46 RBI, he matched Brady Miguel's total from 2022 for the No. 9 spot.

TOP 10 PLATERO… By earning his sixth victory (6–0) Friday against Cal State Dominguez Hills, Ryan Platero moved up to No. 8 on the Otter single–season wins list. Platero, Jeffrey Ahern (7–0, 2019) and Greg Steinbeck (6–0, 2015) are the only players in Otter history to be undefeated with at least six decisions.
