12 Otters Score in 22-1 Victory Over UC Merced

Monterey Bay breaks the 20 goal mark for the third time in program history to defeat Bobcats

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Monterey Bay Water Polo fired on all cylinders for their final non-conference match of the Spring, defeating the UC Merced Bobcats 22-1 Tuesday night at the Otter Tank

12 of the Otters 22 goals came in the first quarter, as CSUMB set the tone as the aggressors early in this one. As strong as the offense was for the Otters, so to was the defense, shutting down almost every Bobcats attack opportunity.

Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) led a group of 12 Otters goal scorers with four to go along with two assists. Joining Fortune in the six point club this evening were Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) with three goals and three assists and Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) with a goal and five assists.

Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) got the start in goal, but gave way to freshman Grace Mensing (Cameron Park/Ponderosa HS) after the Otters built up an 11 goal lead. Mensing answered the call to the tune of a career-high 10 saves and no goals allowed.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Shelby Fortune scored her third goal of the match to push the Otters ahead 12-1 as time expired in the first quarter.

CHECK 'EM ALL OFF… With Paige Labayog both finding the back of the net in this one, every Otter field player has now scored this season. Labayog scored twice in today's contest and assisted on a goal in what was the best contest of her young career.

OFFENSE ON FIRE… The Otters surpassed the 20 goal mark for just the third time in program history. Most recently, the Otters scored 28 goals in a victory over CalTech (Mar. 2, 2019). The performance tonight surpassed a 2007 21 goal performance that the Otter put up against Cal Maritime (Jan. 27, 2007) for second most in a single match.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE… With just one goal allowed, the Otters put together their best defensive performance in over a decade. The last time the Otters allowed one or fewer goals was back in 2010 when they defeated Penn State Behrend by a tally of 18-0.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will hit the road to start their second time through WWPA opponents, as they get set to take on Fresno Pacific. First sprint is set for 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, Apr. 1 in Fresno.
