Pitching and Defense Reign Supreme as Otters Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader to #24 Cal Poly Pomona

Solid outings from Platero, Tonna and Bouillerce not enough as Otters fall 2-1, 8-1


POMONA, CALIF. – The Otters dropped a pair of hard fought battles to the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona, falling 2-1 (14 innings) and 8-1 Saturday at Scolinos Field.

Game one was a pitcher's duel in its truest form, as neither team could muster a run until the 13th inning. Ryan Platero (Hollister/MPC) tossed the first seven scoreless frames before handing the ball to Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) for the remainder of the outing. Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) got the scoring started in the 13th inning with a solo home run, but Cal Poly would respond with an unearned run in the 13th and the eventual winning run in the 14th. 

Runs came much faster in game two, as the score sat at 2-1 through three innings. The Otters fell behind 2-0 in the second, but responded in the third, when Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) and Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS) laced back-to-back doubles. Unfortunately, that was the entirety of the Otter offense, who would not register a hit throughout the rest of the contest, while the Broncos plated six more runs. 
 

GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… The Broncos lifted a sacrifice fly, plating the winning run in the bottom of the 14th. 

GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… The Broncos notched back-to-back rbi singles in the seventh, extending their lead to 8-1.

A GEM OF A NO-DECISION… Ryan Platero was brilliant on the mound, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four. It was Platero's second scoreless outing of the season, as he tossed six scoreless frames against Stanislaus State just two weeks ago. 

ANOTHER WILLIAMS BLAST… Drew Williams launched his sixth long ball of the season today. That now ties him with Darryl Ruiz of Cal State San Bernardino for the lead in the CCAA. 

BULLPEN BOUILLERCE… Nick Bouillerce finished a tough game two of the series on a high note for the Otters, tossing a scoreless 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and just one walk. The sophomore out of Livermore did not pitch in last week's series against San Francisco State, but didn't look to have missed a beat in today's outing. 

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Broncos will play another doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 11 A.M. Game two of the doubleheader is set to be a seven inning contest.
