Big Comeback Falls Just Short Against East Bay

CSUMB nearly erases a 17-point deficit before falling, 80-75

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay saw a big comeback effort fall just short as red-hot Cal State East Bay held on late to earn an 80–75 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

With the loss, CSUMB (10–16, 8–13 CCAA) bows from the CCAA Tournament race with one game remaining while East Bay (12–15, 10–11) remains alive heading into Saturday's final game.

The Pioneers entered the game as one of the weaker shooting teams in the CCAA, relying on discipline and a strong defense to run off seven wins in their last nine games entering Thursday's action. On this night, however, they were on fire, hitting eight of their first 10 3-pointers while racing to a 17-point lead in late the first half. They finished the game 12-of-18 from beyond the arc, their best game this season by nearly 150 points.

CSUMB dug in from that point, however, out-scoring East Bay 51–39 over the final 21 minutes. But the Otters never could get over the hump thanks to clutch free-throw shooting by the Pioneers, who made all six attempts from the line in the final 33 seconds to seal the game.

Freshman Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) scored a game-high 21 points to lead CSUMB. Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 17 and Damjan Agovic (Carmichael/Del Campo HS) pulled down a team–high six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Tim Andreolli made a pair of free-throws with four seconds remaining.

SCHILLING JOINS THE CENTURY CLUB… J.R. Schilling became just the sixth player in Otter history to appear in 100 games with his participation versus East Bay Thursday night.

CAREER–HIGH FOR BRITTON… Ameere Britton's 21 points not only were a game high, but his season-high as well. His previous best was 19 against Cal Poly Humboldt on Jan. 5.

WALL NEEDS SIX TREYS FOR THE RECORD… With a pair of 3-pointers Thursday versus East Bay, Joe Wall brought his season total to 88. In Saturday's season finale versus Cal State Dominguez Hills he needs five to tie or six to break Rocky Steryo's school record of 93 made set in 2002.

LUCKY NUMBER 13 FOR FRANKLAND… With 13 points Thursday versus East Bay, Levi Frankland moved up to No. 13 on the Otter single–season scoring list with 431 points. He needs to score 23 points in Saturday's season finale to move into the Top 10. Of the 12 players above him, only Richard Jenkins (2007) and Davion Berry (2011) got there in as few games as Frankland has played this season (26).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Ameere Britton 21; REBOUNDS: Damjan Agovic 6; ASSISTS: Levi Frankland 3; BLOCKS: Damjan Agovic/J.R. Schilling/Charles Johnston 1; STEALS: Ameere Britton/Joe Wall 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2022–23 season Saturday by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. as part of a CCAA doubleheader with the Otter women.
