Otters Ring Out ’23 With Victory Over Stanislaus

Charles Johnston records 4th double-double in 63-62 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Jailen Nelson's (Carlsbad HS) steal and coast-to-coast dash in the waning seconds of regulation set up his game-winning free throw as Cal State Monterey Bay held off Stanislaus State, 63–62, in a New Year's Eve thriller in The Kelp Bed.

Nelson made the first of two to break a 62–62 tie with 1.5 seconds remaining. With Stanislaus out of timeouts, he then missed the second on purpose and the Warriors weren't able to do anything with the rebound as time expired.

Sophomore Charles Johnston (Sydney, NSW, Australia) led the way with his second consecutive double–double and his fourth of the season, finishing with game highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) added 13 points while Jordan Archie (Bishop Montgomery HS) and Javon Johnson (Antioch/De la Salle HS) chipped in 10 apiece.

CSUMB (4–6, 2–2 CCAA) came out on fire and led by as many as 15 points in the first half. The Warriors pulled to within eight at the break and still trailed by 11 in the second half before they made a run to their first lead of the night.

Stanislaus drew even for the first time at 54–54 on a Daniel Ameyaw layup with 7:31 remaining. John Wade gave the Warriors their first lead with a 3–pointer on their next possession.
The teams played through four lead changes over the ensuing five-plus minutes before a Dontrell Hewlett 3-point play knotted the score at 62–62 with 1:32 left.

The Warriors appeared to have the upper hand when they rebounded an Otter miss and called timeout with 24 seconds left in regulation. Cam Walker tried to get Stanislaus into its final play, but Nelson deflected his pass to Johnston, who immediately fed Nelson on the break. Walker had no choice but to foul to prevent the layup.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game wasn't statistically over until the final horn sounded after Jailen Nelson's free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining broke the 62–62 tie.

WINNING WAYS WITH WARRIORS… Sunday's 63–62 win over Stanislaus State was CSUMB's fifth in a row versus the Warriors dating back to Jan. 20, 2022. It's also CSUMB's second 5–game streak against Stanislaus (Feb. 8, 2008 – Jan. 30, 2010). CSUMB's longest win streak versus any CCAA opponent is six games against Cal State L.A. from Jan. 21, 2005 – Feb. 3, 2007.

DOWN UNDER DOUBLE–DOUBLES… Charles Johnston recorded his second consecutive double–double (and fourth of the season) with game highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds in Sunday's win over Stanislaus State. Of CSUMB's last 21 double–doubles dating back to the 2021–22 season, 14 of them belong to Aussies (Andrew Ferguson 8, Charles Johnston 6).

JOHNSON ON THE BLOCKS… In addition to his double–double, Charles Johnston claimed a career–high three blocks in Sunday 63–62 win over Stanislaus State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston 19; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 13; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 3; BLOCKS: Charles Johnston 3; STEALS: Jailen Nelson/Jaden Tengan 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Closing out the calendar year with a win is huge for our young team. It wasn't always pretty, but I was really proud of our guys for finding a way to win on a night where baskets were hard to find." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting Sonoma State Thursday (Jan. 4). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
