Otters Roar Back to Fell Lumberjacks In Four

Veenedaal leads the way with 12 kills, 9 blocks

ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team overcame a shaky start with a strong finish to defeat Cal Poly Humboldt 15–25, 25–20, 28–26, 25–16 Saturday evening in Lumberjack Arena.

Led by a career–high nine blocks from senior Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS), the Otters recorded double–digit team blocks in a 4–set match for the second time this season. Senior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) added five blocks.

Veenendaal also did the job on offense, sharing team high honors with Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) with a career–high 12 kills.

CSUMB took an early lead in the opening set before a 14–3 Lumberjack run sent them off the rails. But the Otters got back on track quickly in the second set, scoring the first five points and never trailing to even the match.

The third set stayed close throughout. CSUMB saved a match point at 24–25 before eventually sealing the frame on kills from Honberger and Vanderpan. Humboldt overcame an early CSUMB lead to tie the fourth set at 13–13 before consecutive kills from Veenendaal and Honberger sparked a 7–1 run that gave the Otters ultimate control.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Kaylie Honberger ace extended the Otter lead to 23–15 in the fourth set. Two points later, Kea Veenendaal recorded her career–high 12th kill on match point.

ON THE BLOCKS… Kea Veenendaal's nine blocks (2 solo, 7 assists) not only marked a personal best, they marked the second most blocks in a 4–set match in Otter history. Christine Ricketts set the Otter record with 16 in a win over Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 8, 2005.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE THE FUN… With 30 assists and a team–best 20 digs in Saturday's win at Cal Poly Humboldt, Ashley Vanderpan recorded her 12th double–double of the season and her seventh in the last nine matches.

HONBERGER PASSES CLARDY ON POINTS LIST… With 13.5 points in Saturday's win at Cal Poly Humboldt, Kaylie Honberger passed Victoria Clardy (2012–15) for seventh place on the CSUMB career points list with 932. She needs 20 points to catch Christine Ricketts (2004–07) for No. 6 on that list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kea Veenendaal 17.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger/Kea Veenendaal 12; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 9; ACES: Kaylie Honberger/Kaila Uota/Ashley Vanderpan 1; DIGS: Ashley Vanderpan 20.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their final two home matches of the 2023 season next weekend. They'll meet San Francisco State Friday (Nov. 3) before hosting CCAA–leading Cal State San Bernardino Saturday (Nov. 4). First serve both evenings will be at 5 p.m.
