Otters Hand Pomona First CCAA Loss

McManus ties Otter points, goals records in 1-0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — A top-shelf goal from Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) early in the second half was enough to give new life to Cal State Monterey Bay's CCAA tournament hopes as the Otters defeated conference–leading Cal Poly Pomona 1–0 Sunday in Cardinale Stadium.

The win brings CSUMB (3–7–4, 2–5–1 CCAA) within six points of a postseason bid with nine points still on the table. Despite the loss, Pomona remains atop the CCAA standings with 19 points (8–3–3, 6–1–1 CCAA).

Pomona owned advantages in territory and possession throughout the first half, but the Otter defense did a tremendous job absorbing the pressure and keeping quality chances to a minimum. After the restart, the Otters turned the table, establishing forward momentum that eventually led to the breakthrough.

Forward Alexandra Diaz (Brentwood/Heritage HS) saw a quality opportunity blocked by the Bronco defense in the 51st minute. As tends to happen with goal scorers like McManus, however, the rebound fell to her just inside the box. From there, she provided a quality finish into the upper right vee for her sixth goal of the season.

Pomona created several late chances, the most dangerous coming in the 88th minute when goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) smothered a ball on the doorstep, placed it on the ground and then picked it up again, giving the Broncos an indirect free kick at the six yard box. Liberty Ortiz drove the ball low and hard, but the 11-player wall formed by the Otter defense held.

Pomona had one last crack on a direct free kick just outside the box five yards from the endline with 31 seconds remaining. Ortiz curled her attempt on goal, but McKessy was able to punch it away.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pomona was called offside in the box inside the final 20 seconds.
