Otters Sweep Wildcats, Clinch CCAA Title

Otters earn No. 1 seed in CCAA tournament after 8–6, 4–1 sweep

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay clinched its third California Collegiate Athletic Association title since 2013 with an 8–6, 4–1 sweep of No. 22 Chico State Saturday afternoon at Nettleton Stadium.

The wins lift CSUMB's record to 36–12 overall and 31–8 in CCAA play. Clinching the No. 1 seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament means a first round bye when the Otters return to Nettleton Stadium for the tournament starting May 11.

The title clinch came with the victory in Saturday's opener. Befitting CSUMB's season, it was a come-from-behind win. The Otters trailed 4–2 entering the seventh inning when they exploded for four runs. Jason Ajamian's (Pasadena/CSUN) 2–run single tied the game in front of a 2–run double from Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) that gave the Otters a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Things got a little dicey in the ninth when Chico plated one run and got the trying runs on base, but Chris Tonna (Fremont/Kennedy HS) got Jacob Jablonski to ground out to spark the celebration.

The nightcap held no drama for the Otters with Joseph Standley (Nolanville, Texas/Hope Christian HS) in complete control. The senior lefty allowed just one hit through the first six innings. He allowed just two runners to reach second base through the first six frames, with both of them getting there via wild pitches.

Chico finally touched him for a run in the seventh thanks to a hit batter, a double and a sacrifice fly, but he quickly fanned Andrew Crane for his eighth punch out of the game to earn his sixth win of the season.

Nathan Flores (Orange Lutheran HS/Santa Ana College) gave Standley all of the run support he would need with a 3–run homer in the second inning, his fifth of the season.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna coaxed a grounder from Jacob Jablonski representing the potential winning run for the game's final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Nathan Flores belted a 3–run home run to give the Otters a 4–0 lead in the second inning. With Joseph Standley in complete control, the Otter lead never was seriously threatened.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS… When Walt White came to CSUMB for the 2011 season, he took over what was literally the worst team in college baseball the previous season (8–41). By 2013, the Otters had won their first CCAA title. 2022 marks CSUMB third conference title in the past eight seasons (2020 and 2021 were canceled due to COVID). The Otters also claimed the CCAA Championship in 2018.

SETTING ONE RECORD… With 31 wins, the Otters have broken their record for most wins in a CCAA season. The 2018 Otters finished 30–14 in league play.

… WHILE CLOSING IN ON ANOTHER… CSUMB's victory in Game 2 Saturday was it's 36th of the season. The school record for wins in a season is 39, set by both the 2013 (39–17) and 2018 (39–18) CCAA Champion squads.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann saw their streaks of reaching base safely end Saturday. Miguel got two hits in the opener but was silent in the nightcap as his run ended at 29 games. Lindemann went quiet in the opener as his reached base streak ended at 27 games and his hitting streak stopped at 12.

THE BEAT GOES ON… Although the streaks ended for Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann, Nico Hartojo and Jason Ajamian are working on some impressive runs of their own. Hartojo will enter play Sunday having reached in 17 consecutive games while Ajamian carries a steak of 15 games.

GAME 1 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: Jacob Martin (14), Nico Hartojo (7). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA BASES… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nathan Flores (5).

THE LAST WORD… "I couldn't be more proud of what this team has been able to accomplish. Also, this championship is a testament to all the Otters that have come before and set a standard for our program. This group has made our alumni proud, our entire athletic department proud, and all our campus community proud. This team still has a lot to accomplish and we still have another game in the series, but we will enjoy tonight and get back to it tomorrow." – Cal State Monterey Bay Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the regular season with a single game at Chico State Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
